I see, as I browse around, many instances where it appears to me that people aren't aware of, or aren't making use of, vBulletin's post flagging feature, and it would make their life easier.

It's that triangle warning sign in the top right corner of every post you read, and it calls the posting's attention to that forum's moderators (none of which I am :).

It can be used to flag a posting wherein someone's gotten a little (or, ok, a lot :-() out of hand, attitude-wise (not when you disagree with their opinion, or they yours, but when they're being a *jerk* about it)...

and it's also useful for "If you think it's worthwhile, could you make this a sticky?" requests

It even gives you a chance to write a short message to the mods, telling them what the issue with a post is, so if you're writing a sticky, you don't have to put the request *in the message*... where we'll have to look at it for all time, even after they do it. You can just put it in the flag comment.

Hope this helps all the regulars here...

I'm really not into the whole post reporting thing except for Spammers. I think it's kind of petty, sort of 3rd grade-ish.

And that, Ron, is an *excellent* itemization of the general exhortation "be a grownup, idiot", which gives some people trouble. :)

And I know what you mean, Confuzzled... but while everyone has a bad day every once in a while -- including me :) -- some people are just, in my best friend's most lyrical phrase, "springloaded to the pissed off position". No sense letting them ruin everyone else's day, repeatedly -- especially if they're doing it on purpose.

Trolling's controllable here, unlike usenet; we should probably take advantage.

My thrust, though, was more that lots of postings I've seen this month were trying to accomplish those things *in-band*, where the mods wouldn't see them, instead of using the out-of-band channel, which pages them; some of said mods actually commented on that in their <PINCH> messages.

Seemed worth pointing out again.

Communities are the sum of the energy their members put in.

As much as I know the greater majority of the members on this forum can act with maturity there are a small percentage that screw up our attempts to have an all ages, family friendly forum.

Besides tattling the feature serves to let us know if someone wants a thread stickied, it moved to another forum or other general thread/post administration.

We don't see every post so we rely on the members to help us out by letting us know when our services are needed.
