Thanks!!!

I have been in Air Traffic Control for ten years now (Military, Contract Tower and FAA) and have never had a pilot mention a word. I guess anything is possible though...

Have you been reading this website:

or

LOL...there's gotta be a cover up....(wink wink...)

...ok, i'll admit it. Once, a little over a year ago. I only caught part of the conversation between tower and pilot; he asked if there were maneuvers going on @ the local US Army TNG base, and then said something to the effect of "...well I've never seen anything like this in my life and I've flown for 20 years..."

I maintain my skeptical outlook, witness this earlier post to a different thread (originally posted to http://www.radioreference.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21299 -- "Here's The Truth About The Nasty Wx In The Gulf...." on 25 Sept 2005 at 1139):

I would love to see some proof that these phenomena exist. I am a relatively open minded person but have seen some really good pictures of UFO's that were actually pictures of a light globe very much like those in my apartment, only inverted (http://www.ufoevidence.org/photographs/section/recent/Photo378.htm), or tilted (http://www.ufoevidence.org/photographs/section/recent/Photo335.htm). I have seen pictures of clouds passed off as UFO's (lenticular clouds to be specific--http://www.crystalinks.com/lenticul...lufocenter.com/artman/publish/filersfiles.php

the second is the site where I found the information...
http://www.ufoinfo.com/filer/2005/ff0551.shtml

This is presented with the disclaimer that I am still waiting after half-a-century to actually see one of these things that isn't lens flare or a lamp globe or a fuzzy picture of a poorly construcrted model of what an alien aircraft is supposed to look like---

During the heavy post 911 combat air patrols around NYC I heard (monitored) 2 USAF pilots encounter something off long island. They only talked about it on their A-A freq and specifically said they were not going to report it as they would end up grounded.
(No, I don't have a recording but other monitors in the region heard it too)

Whatever it was it was real as they both saw it on their radar and visually, When they asked the E3 in the area if they had it on their screen they replied (after a :10 pause) "yea, we have a track on that" before it retreated at a speed beyond their ability to measure.

No more mention of it from Darkstar(The E3) or the pilots on 364.2 after that.

On an unrelated note, A friend worked for ATC for many years in the SLC sector and regularly saw "Things" above their commercial airspace. Some may say it had to do with Nellis to the south but they knew what those tracks looked like coming back from Canada or the Pacific areas. Savvy controllers had the abillity to look well above 100K' with their equipment.

Well, since your asking....Civ ATC doesn't even look at primary radar above FL 180 unless/sector configuration requires it...ie, midnights with the entire area combined up highs and lows. As for military...the old ASR-8/9 system used at a couple of facilities I worked at in the navy had secondary radar filters and MTI (I've never worked with the STARS system). MAYBE out west things are different...but I doubt it in the Civ center world. As far as I know, our equipment only indicates up to FL 999 for transponder equip. aircraft, and above FL 600 the only way.....ahhh....let me go in another direction...if "they" saw a PRIMARY Target...how do you know if it is at 2,300 feet or 86,000 feet? I kinda got sturred up about 6 replies ago..and figured I'd watch and see where this went...

Once heard a Navy section talk about seeing something split their flight during the night. They asked ATC if they knew about any weather balloons in the area. They never said the U word, and I don't really think they took it too seriously.

Around 27 years ago when I had an analog radio. I can remember a Eastern Airlines pilot talking to Minneapolis Center, about seeing a cigar-shaped UFO fly past his the front of his airplane, then make a turn and fly off in the other direction. The pilot sounded really nervous and shaken up about the incident. He even asked the controller if he saw anything on radar near his plane.

The guys that wear aluminum foil on their heads also monitor CB channel 19 for "instructions". Heard of one case where the aircraft commander reported seeing a UFO and was immediately grounded, drug tested, and sent for psych evaluation. A/C's and flight crews would keep their mouth shut not to be painted with a brush that may be tainted or the ridicule from their peers that would follow.
