• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Brought the radio to the dealer for programming and they are getting this error message. The dealer is saying that the radio has a read/write password. This error message seems to not align with that. But, is there anyway to factory reset a radio that has such a password, or is there anyway to solve this error? Thanks.

I would hope the dealer knows what that message means. If not I'd find another dealer. If they say its PW protected you need the password.
I was oversimplifying. It actually isn’t a dealer, but it’s a government agency that has their own radio department. But either way, I think that the answers here helped me enough to move forward.

does it ask for a password if they try to read it? sounds like theyre trying to clone it with a codeplug from something else, they're gonna have to export/import

if the FC is different that won't work
Incorrect. An XML export/import is expressly one way to manage radios with different flashcodes that have otherwise identical codeplugs. Trust me, I've migrate a number of 6000AN codeplugs to 6000BN using that method, and the flashcodes were quite different.

The other method is to drag/drop between codeplugs with two instances of CPS open. You can even do a top level drag of the entire codeplug. This method is easier than XML export/import because you don't have to delete the phantom crap first, like the first zone that always screws up the import of scan lists because everything is shifted one zone down.

Oh and by the way, since we're talking about cloning APX radios...more recent versions of CPS have started to be more forgiving when cloning between mismatched flashcodes. It used to be very strict and the slightest mismatch would cause cloning to fail, now you might be able to get away with cloning from a lesser capable flashcode to a more capable one, as long as the radio models are the same and there isn't a vast difference in capability. For example you can clone from a 6000 that doesn't have tone signaling or group services to a 6000 that does have those features.

End of today's lesson, boys and girls.
