I was looking at the frequencies in Los angeles and it looks like they have just one frequency for each dispatch local and a tactical and so fourth. And are in p25 modulation? My question is that there is no trunking then just the frequencies with a digital mode thats it. Except public works. Help me under stand this please. Thanks. 8)

Yep, program the frequencies as conventional, not trunked. Works great.

I don't know for sure, but I'm assuming they like the idea of a conventional system without the added cost of setting up a large trunked system. If I remember right they had to get some sort of special ok from the FCC to not put in a trunked system.

The LAPD had the greatest system ever in the original "ROVER" system.
The Rover System was put into operation just prior to thre 1984 Olympics and worked flawlessly. Having worked on parts of Rover, I can say that it was by far the best system I have ever seen to this day.
It more that proved itself during thr Northridge Quake.
Looks like they kept the major part of the original system and added the P-25 to it. Good for them they are smarter than most.
As far as getting permission not to go with a trunked system, I don't know.
I will say this, they probably made the right decision since I would not want to base my safety or the safety of others on a Trunked System, that seems not work as advertised. Too many failures possible.
Maybe the City of Los Angeles was not dazzled by the sales pitch of some salesman.

Radio systems work well when they are designed with proper regard to teh underlying opperations they support.
Sometimes Trunking fits the bill, sometimes conventioanl fits the bill.
Sometimes you need wide area coverage like simulcast, sometimes you need area coverage like a multi-site/multi-frequency system.

The big issue is designing the RIGHT system. There are no universal answers (nor universally wrong systems).

Thanks alot. I thought that had be the case. Strange though for p25 modulation I guss it's for better audio. Will good for them on this choice, I also feel the same way in regards to a trunked system. The phone works better then an RF trunked system.

I used to live in cali. Will visit soon. I was there during that early morning awaking quake. 6.5 if I remember correctly. Almost knock me out of bed there sure power full.

Me too. If it had happened 1 hour later, I would have been on that section of freeway that fell. I was going to college at the time - the quake shut the school down for 2 weeks while they made repairs. Made for a nice break.

Wow it's good thing you weren't there at the time. That's the one thing I feared in California those under passes. Ya cali. has to have the largest freeway system known to man with one bridge over another over another over another. Sure amazing!

I am kinda going off track here but I will mention it anyway what the hay. The day before the quake I remember some kids at the park just across from me and they were banging a drum against a sewer iron bar gate hard to explain what it is but it must be for viewing the inside of a swear. So any way I told them that if they keep doing it they will create such an echo under ground that an earthquake will happen. I spoke to soon. Strange isn't.
