Hi, I'm fairly new at monitoring New Jersey EMS and I am trying to figure out the difference between REMCS, MONOC and Cen-Com. I see all the frequencies and have heard activity on them; I just want to know who covers what. Thanks in advance!

And also...MICCOM. They cover northern new jersey areas. But they are paramedics.

REMCS, CenCom and MICCOM are all regional EMS communications centers. They all dispatch paramedic units for their respective parts of the state. But they also coordinate EMS resources - disaster mobilization, tracking hospital status, dispatching some BLS units in their areas (but not all BLS - that is up to each individual agency whereas the state mandates coordinate ALS dispatch), ... the list goes on.

MONOC is a large EMS provider (ALS, BLS and other) in NJ. Originally started just servicing MONmouth and OCean counties but now they are all over the state. They dispatch their own units but I'm not sure if they are technically a regional EMS communication center.

REMCS - Newark primarily (they are technically part of University Hospital EMS) but other parts of Essex County and the Newark airport/seaport area of Union County. Also dispatches the NJSP Medevac helicopters (NorthSTAR & SouthSTAR) and coordinates all (NJSP, private & mutual aid) EMS helicopter responses in the state. NJ Task Force 1 urban search and rescue, mutual aid coordination with New York City, the list goes on.

CenCom (or CENCOM) - "Coast to Coast" - There is the Union/Essex County channel (155.355) and the Morris/Sussex (155.265) among many other channels. Dispatches ALS from the Hudson River to Delaware River, some BLS (including my agency), some fire departments (including my town - not my agency), Atlantic Air 1, Central Jersey Technical Rescue, Union County OEM EMS resources, etc. They are part of Atlantic Ambulance Corp./Atlantic Health System and based out of Overlook Hospital.

MICCOM - I know less about them but know they dispatch ALS & BLS, coordinate EMS mobilization in their part of the state (Bergen/Passaic).

But there are plenty of others too -- HudCen (Hudson County/Jersey City Medical Center), MedCentral (Middlesex/Robert Wood Johnson), ... If you listen to the daily radio tests on the NJSP trunked radio system, you'll hear them all answer up.

Thanks, just one more question. Who covers what; so far I have gathered that REMCS handle the Newark- Essex County area. CenCom is for Union County. Middlesex uses the JEMS system and as stated above MONOC handles Monmouth and Ocean counties but is used all over the state. Is anything I am saying correct? lol Again thanks in advance!

Middlesex has MedCentral - they handle Middlesex County and a portion of Union County's ALS. They also coordinate resources for Somerset, Hunterdon and Middlesex counties.

Lifecom handles Mercer County, they are also like REMCS, CenCom, MONOC, and MedCentral.

I never knew what CenCom meant, but I do not understand the "Coast to Coast" thing? CenCom, from what I have observed, only dispatches in the north-central NJ area. The Hudson River coast line is covered by: HudCen (Hudson Co), MedCentral (Middlesex Co), MICCOM (Bergen/Passaic Co.) while the Delaware River coast line is made up of: Hunterdon, Warren, LifeCom (Mercer Co). Not sure if CenCom covers all of Sussex Co or not.

According to the State, MONOC is considered a regional dispatch center, though they only seem to act as a self-dispatching center. Monmouth and Ocean County Sheriff's Dept are also regional dispatch centers, but only handle all the BLS units. All of these agencies have the NJSP 800 MHz radio network for coordination. I guess there is some EMS dispatch overlap in this area, huh?

I think CenCom comes from Central Communications but that's just a guess.

Their patch used to have a picture depicting all the areas they covered but I haven't looked at one in a while.

On the east coast of NJ, there is Elizabeth, Linden, etc. though I guess that is technically Newark Bay and not the Hudson River. On the west coast, the last time I was at CenCom to bother them for something, they were dispatching ALS and Atlantic Air 1 to a cardiac emergency in the mountains off of Route 80 near the PA border. The closest hospital to the scene, air or ground, was Pocono Medical Center.

MONOC paramedics (at least in Monmouth County) used to be dispatched directly by Monmouth County (which, as far as I'm concerned, is the way it should be) and not MONOC Control. Since the Evil Empire is gobbling up EMS in the state, they've become a de facto regional dispatch agency.

In South Jersey, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Salem Counties dispatch the ALS providers; I can't speak to Cape May, Cumberland, or Atlantic Counties as to whether or not that's the case.
