You already had this answered in another thread you started.... your scanner can't recieve digital so it won't hear the sheriffs dept. on SAFET. See the other thread for the rest though.

Yup, you need digital to hear Elkhart Co Sheriff, but even then you may not hear a lot as I have heard they are encrypted a lot. Haven't checked my self so I don't know how true that is. I do know the present radio you have will still be good to hear things like Nappanee Pd and fire and so forth. Nappanee channels should be changing soon if they haven't already as they have licenses for narrowbanded radios but I haven't been up there to see if they are active yet or not.

In order to hear your local County Sheriff you will need a Digital scanner. You posted that your local County sheriff is not Encripted. You will still need a Digital scanner.Your analog scanner will not hear anything except Aircraft, Ham Radio etc, and the old public safety channels that are analog.I would recomend that you look at a Uniden 396T or a Uniden 396xt. I own both of these radios and they will work both analog and digital. Your County Sheriff is on the Indiana Safe-t system. This would be a excellent time to upgrade to a Digital scanner., If you will look at the Radio Reference Database for your County you will see that everything including Police, Fire, and all in Digital format. In order to receive digital you need a scanner that will receive digital. Your current scanner you posted will not do digital.

nite27 - the OP (original poster) asked specifically about TALK GROUPS used by the Sheriffs Dept. The only system used by the Sheriffs Dept. that is trunked is SAFET and as you can see below ALL talkgroups for the county except the SCADA system on SAFET are DIGITAL which is the column listed MODE third from the left and A=Analog D=Digital and E=Encrypted. When they first started on the system all sheriffs talk groups had been encrypted, guess they didn't like it as they no longer show encrypted. The Sheriffs Dept DOES use the system as I have heard them on it every time I go up to Nappanee to visit friends.

They certainly DO use it, I didn't immagine them on it, and even sat talking to a deputy I went to school with as he used it in his car. He has both VHF and 800 radios in his car and he uses 800 every day he's working. He also has an 800 portable on SAFET. Even some Nappanee personell use it at times.

Elkhart county dose have some Safe-T radios, all the departments in the county have Safe-T radios. I heard someone parking cars at New Pairs speedway in the summer on ID 15792 (listed asTac-1 in the database). And I have heard Nappanee use them occasionally on ID 15776. They don’t use Safe-T full time for dispatching. Vrlane asked if a BC346XT scanner could receive the sheriff department. So unless he wants to hear them park cars, then the answer is yes for most traffic. Running Unitrunker and listing to the Elkhart tower shows that they don’t use Safe-T very often. That’s all I’m going by is what I see and hear. I’m not trying to start anything, just trying to help Vrlane.

Quote from nite27: Vrlane asked if a BC346XT scanner could receive the sheriff department.

He SPECIFICALLY asks for the Sheriff Dept TALKGROUPS and I and W9NES replied specifically to what HE asked for. He didn't mention anything BUT talkgroups and even then in his original thread I specifically pointed him to the conventional channels as well. And FYI the sheriffs dept uses SAFET for more than just parking cars, as I said I know one of the deputies personally and he uses it DAILY.
I'm not going to sit here and argue with you though, I know the systems is used regularly and if he wants to hear all the talk he needs SAFET as well, not just the conventional. And he also wanted additional departments too, so if he wants to hear Elkhart as well, gee, guess what....

What was the TGID you heard the sheriff’s department use? I have all those ID’s you listed above in my scanner and I don’t hear them. If they use Safe-T everyday, then I certainly should have heard them after 3 years of listing to this system. I checked my scanner and don’t have anything locked out.

Please list the frequency you are hearing your local county sheriff on for everyday radio traffic. If this is the case then the frequency needs to be sent to the data base for your county so it can be updated.

Vrlane, In order to hear what you need to hear you need to program the nearest Safe-t tower site that is located near your home. You need to program them in order.Again you will need a Digital Scanner to hear Safe-t.** Your BC 346XLT is not digital. Your BC 346XLT is analog only.** You neeed to look at buying yourself a Uniden 396T,Uniden 396XT,If you do not have a digital scanner you will not hear anything. Also to answer your question about what frequencies are the talkgroups. They will use all of the frequencies that are being used on the nearest Safe-t tower site near your home.
