Hello, I know this question has had to of been aked before but I could not find the thread on here. Can the BCD996XT digital scanner also pick up analog freq? If so... Is there any pros and cons? like would the BCD996XT pick up both digital and analog clearly? Or would it just be better to buy an analog scanner and a digital scanner? Thanks.

All scanners will receive analog transmissions, even the most basic ones. Not all can decode digital signals, but the ones that can (the 996XT for example) can also receive analog transmissions with no trouble at all.

If you're trying to monitor both conventional and trunking systems, you will find that having one scanner dedicated to analog works better for not missing transmissions. Or vice versa, dedicate your digital to digital trunking systems only.

I also like the sound of analog on older scanners like the Pro-2006 etc, I just bought another scanner off ebay for this purpose of monitoring VHF analog.

You know the old ones I like, the old Electra Bearcat's of either the crystal types or the programmable's like the Bearcat 250, 300 etc. Those all had great audio and the Electra BC-220, 250 and 300 all had great VHF low band reception to boot. I still run those all today for the variety of analog stuff around here.
I also own the Pro-2004 and 2006 which were indeed fantastic radios.
I use those more for searching the military band around 300 MHz.

Then my digitals like the 996XT, are usually dedicated to digital systems but I also monitor analog stuff on them as they are so easy to use and also they will hold everything in this area that interests me due to their super high capacity. So I use the 996 for digital but I program all the areas analog into it and can turn that on with a few button pushes at most.

The 996/396 do a fine job on analog. There is no law that says you have to use digital or trunking with it.

If you only use analog with them, yes you have paid for a capability you are not using, BUT the ability to use dynamic memory, programmable quick-keys, extensive alpha tagging, software programming, pl, wide/narrowband, grouping etc etc with pure conventional systems can be a gigantic plus compared to simpler old-school analog only scanners.
