Looking for an uninterruptible power supply just for the BCD536HP and nothing else, any ideas?

The absolute simplest way would be to connect a gel-cell battery across the power cord of the radio. The power supply will keep it charged unless the AC power goes off, in which case the battery will power the radio. However, this is very basic and really only suited for use in a pinch.

A better way would be to use a couple of diodes in the circuit as in the attached image. You can use a resistor for current limiting instead of a light bulb. You could probably get away with using 1 amp diodes since it's for a scanner.

How much will the bulb limit the current to? (what is the max current?)

The lamp also gives an indication of the charge current - light on = charging.

Buy a small APC UPS. They have a rating and with a little math, you can estimate the run time and match that to what you need.

Any of the units designed for a computer will work. You can sometimes get them for free from a friend in the IT business, and all they need are new batteries.

I have built one hell of an emergency power system for the shack as every two years i replace my wheelchair mobility batteries they are added to my shack backup power and i have a third battery in the tray that powers a IC 7000 and 396xt so i can be playing radio well "walking" around town, going in buildings on the other hand gets interesting with the 55 inch little tarheels HP. Thats what you call making lemonade out of the lemon i got.

West Mountain Radio makes the PWRgate and it plugs in between a power supply, battery and Rigrunner using Anderson Powerpole connectors. Using Astron RS35M and a 160AH Northstar AGM battery. Nothing blinks when the power goes off and once the 20KW Generac kicks in nothing blinks again. Not everybody needs this unless you get lots of power bumps like we do here.

You can get an Astron RS-12A-BB with built in battery backup that has the battery revert circuit built in, Gigaparts and HRO have them, had one of those hooked up to the AOR and Icom receiver stack for years along with a 7AH alarm battery.

I think for one radio a decent UPS would be ok except for the modified sine wave and the new switching adapters may not play nice. Saw one UPS that actually had 75amp Powerpoles so you could hook up an extra battery.

I did a similar thing; I bought a small Cyberpower UPS that will power my radios until the Kohler generator is feeding the house. Works really well, no interruptions.
