Union County, SD Encryption Imminent

Per the discussion at a Beresford City Council meeting, Union County SO will be moving to encryption shortly. I'm 99.9% sure the only reason for this is so that Union County, SD can communicate with STARCOM (Woodbury County, IA) in Sioux City directly via radio. I sigh at these agencies moving to encryption across the state and country. Scanner world is rapidly dying when it comes to monitoring public safety frequencies.

The logical reason is so that Union County (62-1) can communicate directly with Woodbury County, IA who dispatches for North Sioux City, SD. Woodbury County, IA uses STARCOM and they are encrypted without the need for separate equipment (radios), it just makes sense logistically.

STARCOMM use to be the old Woodbury County, IA system, my bad. Yes, they now have switch to the statewide system. I guess that ages me when i remember Sioux City using the STARCOMM system, ha!

It really doesn't matter in the context of the OP, but the local system is still called STARCOMM as far as the dispatch center and local infrastructure. Just like Westcom is still Westcom.... But yes, they are tied into the ISICS core and functionally it's the same.
