United 751 in flight emergency 5574 Mhz:

Sunday night around 0130 EST United 751 declared an en-route emergency on 5574 en-route to Hawaii. 751 was beyond the point of no return when the they lost the right engine. 751 was a Boeing 757-200, with 170 Souls on Board, including crew.

When you lose an engine, your best range altitude will be lower than with all engines operating. That could account for the altitude change.

It takes power to run at higher altitudes. Lose an engine and a single engine can't hold that altitude for very long without reaching stall speed.

Today's engines are much more efficient designs. Also you don't want to be very high if you happen to lose the other engine. Gliding a 737 isn't quite like gliding a Cessna.

This type of situation was one of the “discussion” points when people started looking at 2 engine aircraft for major over water operations. While such operations are pretty much old hat now they were not when first suggested only a relatively short time ago. ETOPS for distances like HI was a taboo subject at one time, or at least something you did not want to hang your hat on at first.

Of course the problem with modern twin engine aircraft is not when you lose one engine, but when the second one also coughs a bit

This won't do their EROPS/ETOPS history any good. The FAA could well pull the approval until good history can be built up again. How many 757-200's have they got, they must be getting a bit long in the tooth by now...

Yes, I have a recording of the incident up until 571 is about an hour out of HI. Could have continued to monitor via ATC Live but just couldn't stay up any longer. Need to edit tape before I can upload it and link it, will try to get a link up asap.
