For a little while now, I've been pondering the Unknown talkgroup mentioned on McCreary County's page in the RR database. Someone has posted that there is a weak federal system of some sort that they can't seem to ID.
I'm in Michigan. But once a year, I drive past signs for a federal prison or pententary off of State Road 92 between I-75 and US-27, in McCreary County.
And I don't see anything listed for that facility in the Federal frequency section of the Kentucky RR database.
Could this be the unknown talkgroup?

Actually, there are two Federal Prisons in the vicinity: MANCHESTER and MC CREARY.
Manchester is about 30 miles or so east of London and Mc Creary is at Pine Knott
which is about the same distance from the Williamsburg Exit on I-75...

There have been few confirmed reports from the area, especially with the Mc Creary Prison, becuase few people really monitor the radio traffic at either facility. I have monitored the Manchester Facility while in the area, but with very little traffic on the sytstem and the rugged terrain someone doing monitoring must be fairly close to the antenna...

I feel comfortable that the two systems are the two prisons by default.... but would like to see a little more information to make sure they aren't something else....

Well, maybe I can help you out next month (I can't believe it's September already).
We will be making our yearly trek to a family reunion in Winfield, TN the second weekend in October. We stay in Stearns KY, which would not be far at all from Pine Knott.
I'll bring the Pro-96 with me this year, and listen for this while we are there.

COOL! That's what makes rr.com such an awesome resource for scanning! Anything you find just submit it and we'll clean that one up some.... if you can pin that system down to Mc Creary that would be a big help... and adding some talk groups, icing on the cake! Tell the family HI and thanx for letting you do some "work" while you are reuniting!

Sorry Uncle Charle, we didn't make it down this year. Had to skip the reunion. I'll listen next October.
