While I'm not familiar with the 296, I've been using a Radio Shack Serial Port -> USB adapter for my Uniden scanners. I don't know if there's a way to create a true USB-only connection.

I don't think that's what he wants - he's looking for the replacement cable itself.

The only place I can think of that can get you one is Uniden themselves. Take a look at this page: http://www.uniden.com/store/accdetail.cfm?item=BWZY1448001 that's the cable for the 250 but I've used my 250 cable to program 296's as well - it's identical. It's about $16 but unfortunately it's on backorder right now.

I recently replaced my computer, due to a fried mother-board. The new computer has no serial port. I have USB ports all over, but no serial ports. The modem does have a 9 pin. But I am unclear on if I can get my scanner to communicate through the modem. I've tried a USB adapter, but had no success with it, while trying to use the ARC250Pro software (in which states that it doesn't support USB adapters). So the questions I have is, "Are there any USB adapters compatiable with the ARC software, Is there a way I can get my unused modem to communicate with the scanner and Is Uniden and Butel aware that the serial ports are becoming extinct?
Thanks in advance. :?

Serial Ports are becoming extinct? I would be surprised if that happened anytime soon.

I wrote a couple of years ago about this subject: I have no serial port on my computer either. I also cannot use an adapter, I tried. Again, why doesn't Uniden and Butel see this and provide us with USB capabilities? I wrote to Uniden with this question and they act like I have two heads.

My laptop has one, and is only a year old.

Serial is a more universal standard than USB. You can convert to USB a lot cheaper than the other way around. So, add a serial port to your USB computer. I realize you would prefer to have those without USB buy a serial to USB converter (at a much higher cost), but you have to take into consideration what will be the most cost effective solution - not just the latest.

Thanks Joe. After researching all the options suggested, your solution became the path I took. I explained my issue to a few others, who also suggest what you have suggested.
I'm no way, a computer guru. However, when it comes to my Uniden scanner, I want the computer to be able to communcate with it. Not having this serial connection is like returning to the stone age in programming my scanner. So I can't thank you all enough for all of your suggestions and comments. I believe my problem has been solved.
Next case. Thank you all.

If you insist on adding new tech, just put a wireless LAN in the scanner. No wires needed to reprogram it or clone it with other units. It's got the RX, so it would just need a low power LAN TX. :D

Thanks for your comments, Joe, but who doesn't have USB? I own a laptop and on many these days, it's a problem getting a floppy drive. But USB seems to be replacing the serial port, I have three USB ports on my computer. My old desktop which I no longer own had a serial port and I installed a couple of USBs.

For you guys without a serial port and are using a desktop computer why not just add a serial port PCI card? For under $20 you can add a PCI card that has 2 serial ports on it. Check www.Newegg.com and do a search for serial. I guess I'm lucky that my MB has 4 USB and 2 serial ports (Abit NF7-S) :)

Let's go all out: 802.11 G plus a built in XML browser to read your favorite RSS feeds and download system data from sites such as RR.com over your wireless lan or public hotspot. Make the next generation of scanner a drop in card for today's PDA's and you could do all that and more. It could be done. That is definitely not "your father's radio scanner"....

I too have a laptop with 2 USB ports and no serial port. I have a BC296 with the ARC software and the USB adapter works great. Went to my local compuer store, got a USB to serial adapter and it works fine. Now the only thing I did have trouble was finding the right comm port, but once I did it worked great !!! The ARC software will find the port for you........

Butel actually now has a USB to serial converter that they recommend and sell. Info on their website http://www.butel.nl
