I have a quick question for the forum. I have been tasked with finding radios for our 4-H program. We are currently using a hodge podge of FRS type radios. I am posting this in the MD forum in hopes of someone having a State or local govt connection that might be giving up gear for upgrades, we need about 35-40 VHF or UHF. I am just getting the ball rolling to try and find contacts, this request would ultimately come from the University of Maryland Extension.

I am also open to business rental houses upgrading gear as well, this would be option 2 as there would be more $$ involved, but leads for this would be great as well.

The budget for ~$300/ea is what they are expecting, but I am hoping for better without having to resort to cheap Chinese stuff.

Thanks,
Mark

There aren't any state agencies that have UHF portables being phased out however over the next few years there MAY be some VHF portables being phased out. The correct method, if you can establish the relationship with the agency surplussing them, is to request a "surplus property transfer" to either the non-profit 4H holding or to the University of Maryland System. Make sure that prior to requesting the transfer that you have your license squared away.

That's very helpful, any idea who may be phasing stuff out?

I have a license on several of the business itinerant frequencies for my business, i think the is probably the same path I would use for them since they are all over the state and very infrequent use. I don't know that coordination would benefit us or the radio community at large. If nothing else we could operate under mine for the coordination period and then reprogram.
