i want to use a scanner with tracking collars on my 2 hounds as a backup. The frequency is 217 so I know the scanner must have that band. My question would be which scanners give you the audible tone that the collars are putting out. I don't know what that feature is called to look for it. I saw somewhere they were talking a CW or something like that any advice would be appreciated. I know looking at some dog sites people use the Pro94,95,97 seris for this

i would recommend a scanner with an s-meter such as icom r-20 or new pro-164 (similar to the pro97), you should also have a directional antenna, if you want a cheep fast directional antenna make an dipole antenna, but a beam or a pin diode switched array would be more effective, and an attenuator would be a great help too,
i recently saw the whole tracking set up with an r-20 at discount electronics in callahan, florida,
hint: i recommend using the null (back side) of antenna for df hunting, especially if using a dipole, i have been in a pinch before and made a dipole out of 2 mc donalds straws and a peice of coax, it worked great ( atleast i found what i was looking for)
