To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I purchased a Baofeng UV-5R programming cable that I want to use with CHIRP. I plug in the cable, and Windows 10 detects as a USB-SerialController. I don’t see any COM port assignment and CHIRP won’t recognize that port name.

I tried installing DVD drivers that came with the cable, but no luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

When you open up the software for your specific radio model, there should be a pull down tab to select the comport.

I ran the driver setup for Boafeng UV 5R. Rebooted. It is not showing up in the port drop down in CHIRP. I chose Custom and typed in the USB-Serial Controller and it hangs. This is after installing the drivers from the CD. In settings Device Manager It says device type other Devices and the device has a yellow exclamation ⚠️ even though Windows 10 indicated it set up the device and said it was ready for use. I have tried updating the drivers and it can’t find them on my PC or on the included MFG CD. It indicates.. The drivers for this device are not installed. Are there other drivers for this cable?

Thanks!

I don't know whether there are other drivers for your cable because I don't know what cable you have.

I had two or three cables before I got one that actually worked. The others were defective.

I had a similar issue, it turned out the programming cable was using a counterfeit serial controller chip. Make sure the programming cable you have is using the FTDI chip.

The issue was the driver that came with the counterfeit cable was an older version driver that wasn't capable of detecting a counterfeit device. But Windows updater would quickly update the serial driver to a current version thus breaking the cable. The workaround I found was just buying an authentic programming cable.

1. uninstall all of the cable drivers you previously installed
2. turn off windows automatic driver updates see directions
3. reboot
4. install the backdated driver located here

or install Linux and use Chirp that way (which is the way I do it as Linux is my daily driver).
