Ok let's say you turn on your unit and you get a "heap" error 2224....as we have talked about before....how do you get to your V-Folders if you get this error every time you press a key??... and I'm wondering why the Uniden Scanners seem not to have this problem with there emprom losing it's memory....

Heap Errors

Doing a search of the forums found this link to GRE as well as many many threads on Heap Errors.

Heap Errors are most often caused by one or more talkgroup (TGRP) objects that are programmed into the radio, but not associated with any trunking system (TSYS). When programming an OOUI scanner by hand, this can happen when a new TGRP is saved without mapping it to a new or existing trunking system, e.g., pressing the Save softkey when "NEW" is displayed in the TSYS field of the TGRP object menu. Specifying "NEW" in the TSYS field tells the radio that a new trunking system is needed. If SEL is pressed while NEW is displayed in the TSYS field of the TGRP menu, the radio will present a blank TSYS menu that can configured with the parameters for the new system, named, and saved. Once the new TSYS is saved, it can be used over and over again for more talkgroups on the same system by scrolling through saved TSYS(ystems) using the left/right arrow keys at the TSYS field.

To correct the HEAP ERROR condition, look for any TGRPs that have "NEW" as their TSYS, and delete them (press FUNC CL) or associate them with a new or existing trunking system. To review programmed objects, press PGM, then use the left/right arrow keys to browse through the Scan Lists, and the up/down arrow keys to scroll through objects mapped to the selected Scan List. Third party programming software can also be used to find unassigned talkgroups. For example, the Win500 application has a feature that displays only TGRPs that are not mapped to a TSYS.

In rare cases it may be necessary to restore the radio to factory defaults to clear a Heap Error. To reset the radio to factory defaults, turn the radio on, wait for the Welcome screen to appear, then immediately press 0, then 1, and follow the instructions on the LCD display to reset the radio. This will result in the loss of programming data, so use this as a last resort.

Ok thank you...but what about the V folder?....if I saved the system in a v folder...how do I get into it when I press any key and get heap error?

Have you tried downloading from the scanner to see if that works? Have you pushed a button or two down too hard, check your buttons. Maybe one of these could clear it up. Sometimes a button get stuck and needs a little persuasion.

no I have not tried downloading yet...no stuck buttons....everyone says back up your files on V folders...but if all you get is error code when you press anything...your not going to bring up the V folder with your information on it...

V Folders

Plug it into your PC and use the software to read it. Most likely there is an object not assigned to a scan list, you can download all v folders then too.

I have the same problem with both my 106 and 197... every once in a while they seem to lose their group/system association... downloading the file from the scanner confirms this is what happens, so i just reupload the file from my pc and it is fixed for a couple weeks or so... it seems to happen at random, nothing going on in particular to trigure it either...

This explains exactly what to do. I recently had the same issue on my PRO 106, and following this instruction solved the problem.

Well I'm trying to figure out how to correct this ....I used Win500 only instead of hand programing ....so how am I going to fix this with my programing all ready set...do I have to clear the scanner and start over with win500 and look for these "new" Talk Groups"?? thanks for your help

In the program, find the talk groups not affiliated with a scan list as mentioned before. Assign then to a scan list or delete them. Save the program file, then connect the scanner to the computer/program and upload your file(s), you should be set from there,

all my talk groups are assigned to scan lists every one...maybe a wildcard?...

Try this, to be 100% sure. Run Win 500. In the ALL OBJECTS tab, scroll through ALL objects carefully, see if there are ANY objects NOT associated or assigned to a scan list. If you find even one, that's your problem. Double check if needed, I had to do it 3 times before I actually saw my problem. Mine had 4 talk groups NOT associated with a scan list.

Don't overlook the fact that in the "All Objects" tab, if you uncheck all the scan lists, as well as the FAV (Favorites) & SKY (Skywarn) boxes, leaving just the "Unassigned" box checked, you'll see any object not mapped to a specific scan list. Remember that TSYS objects themselves are not assigned to a list, though all their associated TGRP objects, including any wildcards for that system, must be.
