Does anyone know the freq for va state police for division 1 Richmond area??
  • VSP normally uses the Virginia Statewide Agencies Radio System (STARS) trunked radio system. To monitor this, you will will need...
    (1) a digital-trunking scanner;
    (2) to program into that scanner the tower-site frequencies (listed as "System Frequencies" in the RRDB) nearest you;
    (3) to program the specific talkgroups you want to monitor (and associate them with the tower-site frequencies from step 2).

    If you want to know which tower(s) cover(s) a certain intersection of a major road, the related Travel Reference (VA) RR Wiki pages might help (for example Travel Reference (VA) I-64, or Travel Reference (VA) I-95, or Travel Reference (VA) US 250, which go through Richmond).

    If you want to see tower-locations on a map, you can click each tower in the above STARS page in the RR DB, and/or check the Google-maps that other RR members have created, which are Google Maps: STARS (map 1) and Google Maps: STARS Sites (map 2).

    Edit: As apd3190 indicated above, you might want to first try the tower listed as "1 (1) // 001 (1) // Richmond // Chesterfield". If that doesn't work well, then use the Travel Reference pages and the Google maps to find a tower closer to your monitoring-location.

  • In place where the STARS towers do not yet have complete coverage (like mountainous regions), sometimes the VSP units will use the "old" VHF frequencies for their local division. But, this happens less often, as STARS coverage improves.

  • An increasing number of VSP vehicles have data-terminals, which you won't be able to monitor.

  • Also, as part of the STARS system, VSP units have vehicular-repeater capability, so that their portable radio repeats through the car which boosts the signal and repeats it to the nearest tower. The vehicular-repeaters use the Statewide DVRS system. But, those transmissions are not likely something you would be able to monitor, unless your scanner is very close to the VSP unit itself.

  • If you have questions about how to program your specific scanner, or whether your scanner can monitor the STARS system, please let us know what brand and model scanner you are using, and if you use software to program it, which software you are using,
Hope this helps,
