I guess this is the right forum for this question, if not, feel free to move.
I have heard that the Valentine radar detector is the top of the line as for performance/sensitivity along with another brand (begins with a "J") sharing the spotlight. Is this true? I'm looking for the most sensitive detector available for the most warning time before being read by the radar on the X and K bands, as well as laser detection.

Start here RadarTest.com - Best radar detector reviews from the world's most respected authority. or here Radar Roy's OFFICIAL Radar Detector Review site!
Don't believe the hype, there is plenty forums on the subject. Valentine have a strong following but the last V1 model didn't change for ages. Don't discount Bel and Escorts (both made in the same factory)
and excellent units, work within your budget. In real life situation there is not much between them. Not sure in States but where I live, cops must see you visual as well as locked on their radar units. All police vehicle set at 600-700m detection and cops have radar units on instant rather than turn on all the time. Only ping you get is they ping vehicle somewhere in front of you. But if you first vehicle around the corner there is no way out of fine and demerit points. Best advice, DON"T SPEED and good luck.
ps my current model, Bel STI, in the past 2 x V1's, Bel 990, Bel 940, Bel 65 and Escort 8500x

Thanks for the info. I rarely speed and when I do, its only a couple MPH over the posted limits. The reason I use a detector is that when doing the speed limit or under it, if the cop's radar unit has not been calibrated for a long time (typical in the states), you end up getting a ticket even though you were not speeding. So knowing they are ahead gives me the chance to slow down to at least 5 mph under the limit to avoid non-calibrated radar units. Fighting such a ticket in court is an expensive ordeal.
Besides, it's a radio signal and that in itself is the reason I like "sniffing" them out.

You need to move to Michigan, the speed limit signs, they are there for reference only. Outside of a few cities you got to be doing something really bad to get noticed and pulled over.

How widespread is the use of warning transmitters fitted to public safety and DOT vehicles, railroad crossings, etc, that some radar detectors are supposed to be able to receive and alert you to? That'd be the only reason for me to buy one.

Or maybe two, since I think there was two competing warning systems. I just can't recall what they were called.

One system was called SWS (Safety Warning System?).

I've seen some portable signs warning of construction ahead that had a K Band emitter attached but they weren't sending out any information with the signal.
