I think it came to light when we were working on the Scannermaster DC/VA, edition 3 or 4. (probably 15 years ago) I have ed.4 in the truck and will check to see if it's there. We also had a map of the districts & residencies. The same info could also be in the last edition of Monitor America....how primitive that all seems now.

I'll dig around and see if I can find it.

I checked the Scanner Master DC/Virginia Guide, 4th edition, and there is an exhaustive list...although they are admittedly dated.

Chatham VDoT

The Chatham Resiency (3400 series on unit numbers) was using VDoT channel 28 (47.240 / PL 110.9) when the repeater on White Oak Mountain was working, but it broke and they are not going to fix it, so they are back to VDoT Channel 24 (47.240/PL 94.8). The Martinsville Resiency uses 47.040 PL of 82.5 or VDoT Channel 11, but each truck there has a CB radio, more so to communicate with the contract operators but they use them more often than the state radio equipment. Some of the individual lots are using VDoT channel 1 thru 6 for their local "lot" comms around here this way they do not interfere with the entire residency on its main frequency. VDoT Channel 25 is used for flaging operations (45.76 PL 77.0) but they are also using UHF portables on Ch 1-453.4125, Ch 2- 458.4125 and PL of 77.0 for flagging where this new equipment is available. I have also scene the survey crews using UHF as well.
Also remember the supervisors pick-ups all have state cell phones. So it really depends on what the local lot and residency desires to do. Recently while in the Marion Area HQ, they were using CB channel 32. So if your local VDoT "lot" has a CB antenna on its roof or you see CB antenns on the trucks, try 27Mhz.

As for unit numbering around here:
3100 Lynchburg District Office
3200 Amherst Residency
3300- Appomattox Residency
3400- Chatham Residency
3500- Dilwyn Residency
3600- Halifax Residency

Each district office is their district number ( 1 thru 9) and then the suffix 1.
(3-Lynchburg, 1-District Office, and 00 would be the district engineer, 01 the assistant district engineeer and on down the line) which each residency falling in alphabetical order usually. Within each residency are area lots and they fall into place but its not alphabetical from what I have.
The Chatham Residency is:
3400- Resident Engineer
3410- Chatham Area HQ Superintendant (numbers running from 3411 thru 3419)
3420- Brosville Area HQ Superintendant (3420-3429)
3430- Kentuck Area HQ Superintendant (3430-3439)
3440- Rondo Area HQ Superintendant (3440-3449)
3450- Mt Airy Area HQ Superintendant (3450-3459)
3460- Gretna Area HQ Superintendant (3460-3469)

they also often use the ED (Equipment Division) number scene on the door panels. By-the-way, if you see the letter R on the doors, that indicates this a rental vehicle, not owned by VDoT, although it may be marked with the VDoT decal.

Hope this answers some questions.

Man, that' s great! I didn't want to reprint the Scanner Master data here (I was on the editorial staff, and don't want to break an agreement) but was hoping that some folks would come forward. That's a great breakdown of a district and should give us all a template for doing our own research.

VDoT Bristol

From an old VDoT "mobile unit directory" book I have:

1100-1199 Bristol District

1200-1299 Abingdon Residency
1210- Chilhowie
1220- Broadford
1230- Sugar Grove
1240- Marion
1250- Benhams
1260- Abingdon
1270- Abingdon
1280- Glade Spring

1300-1399 Jonesville Residency
1310- Ewing
1320- Jonesville
1330- Jonesville
1340- Dryden
1350- Pattonsville
1360- Ft Blackmore
1370- Nickelsville
1380- Gate City

1400-1499 Lebanon Residency
1410- Big Rock
1420- Oakwood
1430- Deskins
1440- Blackford
1450- Lebanon
1460- Castlewood

1500-1599 Tazewell Residency
1510- Bland
1520- Rocky Gap
1530- Tazewell
1540- Claypool Hill
1550- Tazewell
1590- Big Walker Mtn Tunnel

1600-1699 Wise Residency
1610- Fremont
1620- Fremont
1630- Fremont
1640- East Stone Gap
1650- Glamorgan
1660- Coeburn

1700-1799 Wytheville Residency
1710- Independence
1720- Elk Creek
1730- Baywood
1740- Volney
1750- Speedwell
1760- Wytheville
1770- Fort Chiswell

Again, this was printed in in the 90's, and there have probably been some changes, but it should give you an idea of how their radio unit desiginators are layed out. Each area lot has a maintenance superintendent his number is the xxx0, his foreman was the xxx1, and on down the line. Some area headquarters or lots also used the ED number I was talking about in my previous post. Best way to figure these out is if you hear the area lot, say "Baywood to 1730" or any number from 1730 to 1739, its a pretty good chance these are their desiginations. If its another unit desigination, they changed numbers. The Martinsville Residency use to change every time I got use to them. The residency office personnel are from xx00 thru xx09. The resident engineer is xx00, assistant RE xx01, project engineers xx03, residency maintenance supervisors xx05, mechanics, sign shop foremen, etc take up the xx06 and xx07 numbers, and the permit inspector is usually xx09. Again, this is an old list and somethings could have changed, but this was accurate a few years ago.

Hope this helped,

Thank you so much, however it looks like they've changed im sorry I didnt post what i have so you didnt need to enter all that, but it does give a model to look at how each residency has changed respectivly to the new designations.

Right now ive got Bristol District residency to residency in multiples of "1000" vs the previous 100

Ranging from 652 to 16501

At least I got sumin to figure out now :)

I just thought I would share some info with everyone that I found today. I was in the VDOT Beach Area HQ office in Chesterfield and on the radio, the callsign WNLV542 was written. I looked that up on the FCC site and it shows the frequency as 47.34 and it also lists the antenna location as Rt. 654 (Spring Run Road) at the Beach Area HQ. The radio was also VERY busy on that frequency so I can definately confirm that as being used in Chesterfield County.
