• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Ok.....gotta ask.....If I'm looking at a frequency on a BaoFeng and then select MR (for channel, correct?), why doesn't it switch from that frequency that you are looking at to the channel number related to that channel? For instance if I'm looking at channel 1 which I programmed in Chirp to 146.5 then I select VFO, why doesn't it display 146.5?

What am I not understanding? I've looked and I don't see a video addressing this....

Thanks!

Variable-Frequency Oscillator (VFO) and Memory Mode (MR) are two entirely different modes on a receiver. The former mode being tunable meaning that when you press up or down arrow the frequency goes up or down whatever step size you have the VFO set to. Memory mode (MR) is just that, frequencies you have programmed into memory. Hope this clears things up for you

VFO and MR (I call channel).....I wish I could hit the button and see the VFO for say channel 10 and hit the VFO button again and see channel 10s frequency.... How do I know if channel 10 is 146.5 without CHIRP? While on the channel I selected menu and went through the steps and didn't see the frequency....

The radios' firmware / menu is basically going to determine what you can show on the screen. On many radios in the menu, it lets you select either channel name or frequency to display on the A or B band. On other radios, it will let you show both matching channel name and frequency on the A and B band.

Most of my radios or either one or the other, but I do have a few that will show both name and frequency on both A and B band, such as the RT890, RT900. The Baofeng 5RH Pro (GPS) does as well after I installed the newest firmware update, and a couple Quansheng K series radios I modified using F4HWN firmware and egzumer_v0.22 firmware. Both of those will add channel name and frequency on both A and B bands as well.

VFO is a separate entity from memory channels. The latter a bit self explanatory where you program a channel.
VFO, is just that, you enter a frequency and that is what you have.
Scanning cycles through memory channels, scanning VFO scans a range of frequencies depending on the step size.

MR = is Memory Recall. { Something that sadly sneaks away over the years.}

Each channel doesn't have a VFO. There are only VFO A and B. They are totally independent of memory channels.

Menu 21 MDF-A and Menu 22 MDF-B allow you to set the upper (A) and lower (B) displays to show the memory channel number only (CH), alpha tag (NAME) or frequency (FREQ).
You can't do that with one button press.
It only works in memory mode.
You can set display A to NAME and B to FREQ an it will show the alpha tag and frequency if both are set to the same channel but you can't make the displays track eachother when you change channels.
You can't set A to a memory channel and B to a VFO or vice-versa.
