For the past hour I've been listening to North Carolina State Police VHF Lo Band. Search the 42-43 MHz band and you'll see what I mean.
Their tones are 173.8 PL.

Closer to home Chattaqua County and Jamestown NY Fire were appearing in the 33's.

What I have done for VHF Lo band Dxing is create three different systems for different geographical areas.

For East coast, I created a North Carolina Lo Band Quick Key
For Midwest, I created a Missouri Lo Band Quick Key
For the West coast, I have California Highway Patrol Quick Key.

I'm using a BCD 996XT and a 25 year old RadioShack All Band antenna.

Tonight, it was North Carolina that was active for me.

I heard some activity on Channel 6 CB tonight. I've never monitored CB until now (since I now have a capable scanner). Apparently this is the high-power channel. How drivers can listen/talk on this while driving I don't know. The whole thing just sounds like an episode of the Dukes of Hazzard or something. I'd have tons of fun if I had a CB radio at home.

You may want to give Missouri a listen right now.
The troopers are popping up all over the 42 MHz band.
