Hindsight is 20/20 at times. This time I think that the hindsight was more like 20/800 in this case.

Yes, but the new VHF radios are tiny compared to the old ones and they have more than 100 channels (at least 80 programmed now). The fire apparatus have them installed on the ceiling so they take up very little space.
