Looked like a lot BK and Motorola, apx-8000's. And anytime you see wildland firefighters, you see 18" vhf antenna's on there BK radio's. It helps some times, in my area, the longer antenna's don't help a lot.

I have trouble just talking people into using a 6" whip instead of a stubby on UHF! I imagine the difference of the VHF whip vs. helical is even more pronounced, though the whip isn't getting enough groundplane, either. I wonder if anyone's done a study and documented the real-world differences in SNR/BER, especially wrt body/nearby object interference.
