Oops, sorry, I misunderstood a Baofeng spokesman mispronouncing UV-5R. My bad.

Lots of VHF 18" whips surprised me.

Looked like a lot BK and Motorola, apx-8000's. And anytime you see wildland firefighters, you see 18" vhf antenna's on there BK radio's. It helps some times, in my area, the longer antenna's don't help a lot.

Pretty much all BK's - GPH's, P150's and BKR's (the BKR's come in green like the Motos).

The 18" antennas are more of a status symbol to show everybody in camp how big of a deal you are.

I have trouble just talking people into using a 6" whip instead of a stubby on UHF! I imagine the difference of the VHF whip vs. helical is even more pronounced, though the whip isn't getting enough groundplane, either. I wonder if anyone's done a study and documented the real-world differences in SNR/BER, especially wrt body/nearby object interference.
