this may be a dumb question but I cant for the life of me figure out how to view text tags on feeds with them posted as such. I've tried both itunes and winamp as players and all i see is the name of the feed scrolling. What am I doing wrong?

If you're using WinAMP (at least i can vverify this with recent versions) and you are listening to active chatter on a feed claiming to support text tags, but you don't see text tags, then the feed probably isn't really sending the tags. Somebody probably just checkmarked it to encourage more people to listen in, not realizing that 99% of the listeners (based on my own statistics for my feed) could care less about tags and simply use a web browser or WMP.

Or they may think they are sending tags but they are not.

Check out my feed and see if you are seeing tags on it when using WinAMP. This one is definitely sending tags - Jefferson County Police, Fire, and EMS Live Scanner Audio Feed

If you don't see them when there is an audio transmission, then I guess there is something amiss with your winAMP. But out of the box it should work.

Please tell me what feed it is that is not broadcasting the tags. Also just to be sure, they do have the alpha tags option on there feed?

My feed is broadcasting tags. But I only see them when using Itunes, not in the RR web player or Windows media player. I have not used any other players.

i have noticed quite a delay with the tags, so if it's a quick transmission, it may not show up. It also scrolls in Itunes.

Tags do not appear in the webplayer. You need to use itunes or winamp to view tags.

Thanks Kendrick. I knew I could find someone around here that actually knew what was going on.

You're welcome. I'm going to have to check out your feed - I see you're using a commercial radio and antenna for it. I bet it sounds really nice!

The list of relatively common players that have been reported to me as supporting tags is:

iTunes, WinAmp, VLC, Foobar (AKA foobar 2000) and RealPlayer. Note RealPlayer has at least one ugly bug handling SHOUTcast/Icecast metadata tags and is therefore not recommended.

I'd be curious to hear of other players (common or not) that support tags.

If you are using a windows mobile device may I reccomend a freeware GSplayer
It reads the metadata and I have had good luck with it.
