Can somebody let me know the ASTRO 25 Channel ID's for this VHF statewide system. It's not posted on the Db for the premium side of this site.

Would be awesome if somebody has it or can sniff the control channels in this area. Also, I can submit them to the Db when done

Until a tech with the system sees you up here talking about the system and then encrypts it. By your name seems like you are a tech for TSA so I am not surprised not very smart. I wouldn’t call you a tech.

There are people who insist that the state police, if not the whole STARS system, are going to be encrypted by the end of the year anyway.

There are several reasons why one is NAS, fb groups, scanner feeds are the three main reason but as most know VSP uses computers most of the time unless there is a pursuit.

There are definitely a few VSP radio techs floating around on these forums too...

I know I remember my dad and brother telling me the good old days when people just listen and was quiet. He also told me about a time someone had a radio and accident happen in front of the person and people expected for him to call for help thinking since he had a radio he must volunteer but he didn’t have a ham license but had the SO/FD/EMS in his radio unauthorized. Carrying around a radio doesn’t make anyone look cool no matter how many TikTok you see of people doing it. Unless you are authorized to have one just get a pager/scanner and move along. That’s just my two cents.

As long as the radio dont tx. Its not illegal, no different then having a scanner.
I have no knowledge of programming a system radio, but I understand it is difficult to program them so they do not affiliate with the system being monitored. That becomes a problem if it shares a radio ID as an actual users radio. It can cause issues for their radio to be rejected from the system.

Someone programing a radio to affiliate on a system and cloning a ID is highly illegal. As far as programing a radio to monitor and not affiliate is not hard depending on what radio you have. BK and Harris are very easy and there are settings in the software to not affiliate. Motorola is differant story. Requires alot of indepth programing to fool the radio into no affiliate.

Where im at,even near the Virginia border,on the quad SDR trunk set up,20+ foot multi antenna set up,2 preamps in line,i dont get any cc signals from the nearest vsp stars sites..though this evening i looked up the fcc licenses for VA sp and found 5 or 6 freqs not in the listed Stars cc database,so im gonna try them in the next couple days..earlier today i was on the parkway and got No CC activity on the listed rr data i had programmed in for Grayson,Carroll,Patrick,Smyth county sites..i was like jeese, this area is a radio rf dead zone..i dont have any of the listed encrypted tg's programmed in,wouldnt matter,id still get a rf signature from the continual control channel flow and the listed freqs arent showing on the spectrum..anyway,ill try the fcc licensed freqs i found this evening and see if anything shows..i also put the NAC at F7E for one system set up,but once again, there isnt a signal being shown for the listed cc freqs..then again,it may be obstructive barriers( mountains) as a cause...Anyway,a curiosity..back before VA went to trunking,it was easy to hear Div 4 Wytheville in Winston Salem on 159.00mhz( or whatever it was back then)...Any thoughts, opinions welcome

Even though not every talkgroup is listed as encrypted on this site, there is nothing left to listen to on STARS in the clear. Since they went full time encryption last fall, I have only heard about 2 transmissions "in the clear", already listed in the database as mutual aid. The legacy VSP dispatch frequencies (about 159 MHz) have been silent since the switch to the digital system more than a decade ago. Some VSP troopers continued to used 154.665(?) and 154.695 after the digital switch as "talk around channels" (not using the repeater). However that option only lasted less than a year back then.

Once in a while last winter I would hear snow plow operations on the legacy VDOT frequencies. But most of those were moved to STARS a few years ago, and can not be heard now.

What im saying is on sdr trunk, with multiple sdr dongles, pre amp amplifiers, above roof antennas, etc, nothing is showing on the rf spectrum analyzer, where as any active,in range control channels show a constant spike.but apparently where im at,not getting anything..But,also this past weekend with control channel scan,No RSSI nothing showing on a portable radio, but i have found 4 or 5 fcc licensed freqs that vsp has at several sites that arent listed in the system profile,so,ill try again in the near future..i realize the encryption factor, but there will still be a steady cc signal showing on the channel spectrum analyzer..

So for now no reason to even have the system in the scanner? Maybe someone can approach the new governor....
