Voice activated recording-GRE/Radio Shack

What is the best way to record with a voice activated tape recorder with the GRE's or Radio Shack Pro-197/106's as there is no dedicated "tape out" jack like the Unidens? The only options appear to be the external speaker jack or the headphone jack. I tried an old V/A cassette recorder but it ran continuously, so perhaps the recorder is too old & tired, not the scanner.

Sometimes there's just enough hiss coming out even if there's no voice. Does your recorder have an adjustable threshold or VOX sensitivity setting of any sort?

The background hiss seems to be exactly the problem. Yes it has a hi & lo threshold, but I think it may be time for a new recorder also.
