I've never been able to find a frequency for them for Calgary area. I suspect that they just use MiKE phones if anything.

The only roads maintenance that I've ever found a frequency for was the Carmacks crews doing work on Highway 2 inside the Calgary city limits, and they're on an LTR trunk based out of Calgary.

On a really really wild guess, you might try listening to the LAD channels (154.1 et al). They might be on those since 99% of truckers in the area seem to be.

I found Volker doing road work using LAD channels out on the highway to Mclean Creek near the information center and Texas style gates. They were using the channel for traffic control, but what seemed strange is that I only herd them when I saw them, and just as quickly, their traffic vanished as soon as I rounded the bend.

Seemed like it was a very low low power line of sight type deal. I know for a fact that even my little cheap Motorola's can go farther.

I am very sure I recall the frequency as either.....

163.05000
or
173.37000

But better luck tossing them all in there. I never had tone search going, maybe I'ill enable that tonight.

Do you have the details on that system for me to program into my scanner?

I don't know for sure, but I would believe it to be something like Logging and Drilling. They're commonly known as road channels for truckers like drilling rig hauling contractors, logging trucks, etc., to be used as a common CB-ish type channel. If you ever go down a logging road, they are required to call out their mileages every so often, i.e. "Empty pickup mile 4", "Full cementer mile 21", so that they know when to encounter one another so you don't have, for example, empty van mile 17 and full Caterpillar bulldozer mile 17 at the same time. ;)

Have heard some trucks sanding and ploughing Deathfoot Trail lately. And they have been on Nextcom, freq. as listed on Radioreference. Have never heard any Volker or Carmacks on LAD frequencies. Only heard truckers with all their swearing so tend not to listen except if traveling, for road info.. Then only if by myself. About 2 years ago, did see some Volker workers and heard that "blinking" Mike beeps. It just drives me crazy hearing the beeps. And people with Mike phones always seem to run them with the volume turned up as much as possible. Often so high that the sound is rasping and difficult to understand. There are some Volker freq. listed on Industry Canada search and TAFL, but have not heard anything on them.

LAD = Logging Administration, In addition to freq's that logging companies could use licensed to say Weyerhauser etc, there were common ones assigned so as they could all communicate simplex among one & another.
THat system has been replaced by another one called Resource roads @150 mhz simplex all with CTCSS ,
all radios shops across Canaada have been asked to stop programming LAD in the previous fashion and start using Resource roads for logging operations.

That's not a bad idea. I hear a lot of truckers using frequencies in Alberta that are assigned to other legitamate users. The problem appears that a lot of truckers feel that because they have a TAD radio programmed by a radio shop, that the frequencies in the TAD radio can be used in other provinces. I believe a number of truckers are now using ICOM radios as well. They may well have a license to operate these radios in a specific logging area, but that doesn't mean they can be used in other provinces. As I stated, a lot of the LAD frequencies listed, are used by businesses, or other licensed users in Alberta. Voker Steven might be one of these, but have never heard them on the LAD frequencies.

Not to mention a certain 'cb' shop at a well known truckstop in edmonton that sells ham vhf mobiles, selling points are 60watts, and simple to program all by yourself.
