    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

My experience is mostly with Motorola and Kenwood commercial radios. I have zero experience with programming Vertex radios. I have a Kenwood TK790 and TK890 that I'm considering converting for single head/dual band setup. My only issue with the Kenwood is that I'm limited to 160 memories either in single band/single head or dual band/single head configuration. The Vertex offers 250 memories and that's why I'm giving a look at it. Before I do I have a few questions for those in the know.

I have several questions:
1) In a single head/dual band configuration, my Kenwood offers 160 memories total for both VHF and UHF. The Vertex has 250 memories, is this the max amount of memories in total for the Vertex no matter the configuration? I.e., if I had a VX6000 configured for single head/dual band (VHF/UHF) setup would I be limited to a total of 250 memories or would I have 500 memories?

2) I'm active in Ham radio and I also volunteer with our local EMA. Our EMA uses VHF exclusively. I have a need for using this radio in the 155mhz spectrum as well as for 2 meter/440 ham radio. Will the VX6000 program, easily, down to 144mhz and 440mhz without any performance degradation? My Kenwood will program down that far but the software gives me a warning that the frequency is out of band. Will the Vertex software allow programming down that far?

3) How easy, or hard, is it to configure the VX6000 hardware/software for a single head/dual band setup?

Any other suggestions, opinions, etc. is greatly appreciated since I'm a newbie to the Vertex radios, except for the Yaesu brand of ham radios:)

A 6000 is basically a x90 with a different firmware and minor cosmetic changes.

There are different ranges of VX 6000 radios. From what I've learned from some TxDOT friends, they are identical to band split and in modification to the VX4000 and VX5000. Worth noting, if is a newer radio it may not wideband.
