Currently have this radio as a SHTF radio. Barely use it but test it out from time time. No, I don't have a ticket. Strickly SHTF radio so can talk to someone if needed. Anyways, looking at the newer radios, wondering if I should update and sell this one. Are the newer ones better? Not many quad band radios from what I see. Doubt I would sell it to upgrade but if there is something allot better, would consider it. Thanks

I used a VX-7R and smaller and older VX-2R when working on board many vessels for the oil industry. With freeband mods, they were great for testing a rack of radio gear from HF to UHF, to include aviation band equipment. They are still useful if you need multiband and AM/FM. However, I now use a cheap Anytone 878 for much of my radio testing for work. My testing, after using test equipment is an actual radio check, with an appropriate radio as a distant end, or the Anytone if there is nothing available. While being older Yaesu radios, they are still useful, and work well. I still use both at times, but even Yaesu has told me that they cannibalize older parts radios for the spare parts they sell, and very few parts are available these days.
