If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello,

I have a fleet of VX4200 in which I am trying to customize the scan options. What I want is the first 5 channels to stop on scan, which is not user changeable. The rest of the channels I want the user to be able to decide if stop on skip on scan.

The only setting I can get to work is a dealer setting where the first 5 channels are set to stop on scan, which is NOT user changeable, and the rest of the channels are unable to be scanned at the preference of the user

or

all channels are able to be scanned at the preference of the user.

Looking for any that can help.

Thanks

I've exhausted all possibilities today and I can't seem to get the radio to program as I want. I doesn't seem as the "dealer" and "both" function under the scan column work as they should.

If anyone comes up with something new, let me know.

VX4200 scanning

The SCAN function is certainly not very well documented. I decided it was best to use the USER scan list (you also have to select SCAN EDIT ENABLE from the SCAN menu) and let users choose.

Actually, figuring out the scanning AT ALL took me a while. If you're just starting out, this will save some time:

If you briefly press the SCAN button (P2 in my case, but whatever button you have the SCAN function assigned to), the radio toggles between SCAN and non-scan modes.

If you want to include or exclude a channel from the user scan list:

1. If the radio is in SCAN mode, press the SCAN button briefly to exit scanning.
2. Using CHAN UP and CHAN DN, step to the channel you want to include or exclude from the scan.
3. PRESS AND HOLD the SCAN button. The display will show either SCAN STOP or SCAN SKIP.
4. If you want to change to the other option, press and hold the SCAN button again.

If you want to go back to SCAN mode, briefly press the SCAN button again.

These are powerful and flexible radios, but the learning curve for them has been steep.
