Stopped in local RS, to see if they had any Pro 97's-they didnt, but after conversation with the store manager, she said I may want to wait, cause she was told that Warren county is going digital June 1st, with Butler county to follow soon after.
Has any one else heard this, or was she just trying to sell a
pro 96

Warren COunty

I have a buddy that is a deputy for Warren County and I asked him about this and he said that they are in the process of converting and that they will be switching to a digital system soon, but not June 1st as far as he knows, it will be a bit later. Bad news though, they will most likely be encrypted on the SO and municipal police channels. Fire and everything else will be analog for the time being. He said that the only hicup right now is getting coverage in the Deerfield Twsp area. That has always been a trouble spot for them. They still have work to do on the repeaters around the county because coverage gets real bad around the south eastern part of the county. I'll update as I get more.

Butler/Warren Co going digital?

The only thing going digital is the microwave sytem that links the towers together. Thats it no voice channels or anything like that going digital anytime soon at least in the next few years. This info direct from the Deputy Director of Telecomm.

If you have any desire to listen to OSP, ODNR or other state agencies and/or
Butler, Clermont and Hamilton Counties then you are better off with the Pro-96.

A buddy of mine who is a police officer in Butler County advise me awhile back that the Butler county Sheriff office was considering going digital and there was some talk that they may go encrypted. Untill they start building a system, these are just rumors to me.

However, if you live in Butler county area, especially if you live close to Hamilton county you may want to consider buying a digital scanner. Just make sure you research both Uniden and GRE/RadioShack models and buy the one that has features you like.

Is it just rumors that they Licensed 800 MHz frequencies with the note "possible encryption"? I use to know a dispatcher up there, it's been quite a while since we spoke, but I'll give him a call and see if I can find anything out.

Okay! To set the record straight here is what Butler County is wantiing to do:

The City of Oxford is putting a digital (read: APCO-25 compliant) Motorola system online. It is on now, but only one talkgroup has been monitored with the Radio Techs testing the system. West Chester Township (formerly Union Township) has had their own Motorola Type II system since the early 1990s. Themselves and the City of Monroe are the only users of it.

Butler Couny recently licensed for their own 800 MHz frequencies (after years of trying to leave their aging, falling apart VHF convnetional system).

Now what Butler County wants to do (via the EMA office) is to take their frequencies and tie them in with Oxford and West Chester Township into one countywide APCO-25 compliant system. This is all being done with Homeland Security Grant money. As the money makes its way to the county EMA office the system will start to grow. It is a little premature of people to suggest the system itself will be "encrypted" just by the word sshowing up in the licensing. Anyway, the system will only grow and put into place as fast as the grant money flows in. Butler County has had budget woes for years now and certainly could not afford this out of the county budget.

It is something we all need to keep and ear and eye on :)

Mark

P.S. As David stated, Warren County will not be going digital anytime in the near future if ever. They are merely working to convert the microwave links over from analog to digital.
