Yes, some of the older Motorola radios had different signaling installed. The newer radios have them installed only on as needed basis.

Ok. I didn't know that. I have always used CDM and HT1250's and they come with MDC1200. I think what you're saying is they can put a board w/ GE Star?

Wayne PD uses Motorola MCS2000 Model 1 mobile Radios, and Motorola HT1000 Portables with GE-Star signaling. From what I understand the now discontinued MCS2000 and HT1000 radios had a flash with an option for GE-Star signal, they are not using addon boards. Most cars have 2 Radios installed some MCS2000 Model1's on UHF and VHF-HI, some have a CDM1250 on VHF-HI. VHF-HI is for SPEN stuff and a private frequency that is not recorded at the main console. FD and EMS use Mostly MCS-2000's and HT1250 portables, for whatever reason they have higher end model 2's for FD and Model 3's for EMS.

Is GE-Star signaling better? What's the difference if any?

I notice some department's, even Wayne use a mix of MDC1200 and GE Star.

GE-star is an old signalling format, way before Modat and MDC-1200. In fact I believe it debuted in the 1970's. Yes some departments do use a combo, probably newer radios have been installed that are not flashed with GE-Star. Allendale uses GE-Star with addon boards in their Kenwood radios on 460.1250.

The main reason they probably use GE Star is that Wayne used GE radios exclusively for years. The infrastructure is set up to decode Star.

What would be the point?

I asked......because I was considering getting a radio to decode GE-Star.
Wow, now that's hardcore scanning - wanting to that portable radio 102 just keyed up.
