• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Sorry, mis-type title. "Weird open MIC"

I don't know when it started, but at 2100 hours eastern standard time (when I turned on my scanner), I started hearing long transmissions of static lasting 2-3 minutes. I heard it on FRS channel 9 first and thought I picked up some goofball holding the mic key down. But then it stopped for a few seconds and my scanner went back to scanning. Then it stopped on FRS channel 10 and began again. The transmissions are progressing upward through the 400mhz along the GMRS and FRS range.

It sounded to me like just static, but I haven't been listening to scanners long so I wont say too much. I live in south east Georgia. As I post this at 2112, it is on 467.7250mhz.

Ok, longest transmission is on 467.7250. Maybe someone has a stuck open mic on a repeater? BTW, as of 2123 its still transmitting.

I've confirmed some sources for GMRS/FRS signals.
check for a 900 Mhz wireless internet within 10meters of RX'r (and for any business end pointed your way of any yagi associated with one)
Another source is (this is weird) car radios with MP3 CD players in them may TX on specific GMRS FRS frequencies, and I mean specific +2.5khzI've tried several antennas on the RX'r with the same result

They don't actually "transmit" on those frequencies, they simply emit spurious radio signals. Remember, CD players, especially those with MPn support, are actually dedicated computers and have lots of RF-generating equipment within. I have a Panasonic SL-SX480 pocket MP2/3/Red Book CD player that emits strong white noise on FRS 4, 6, 9, 11, 14, GMRS 15/550, 17/600 and various other 400 MHz frequencies. If I move my radio away from it about 2 1/2-3 feet it goes away. Seems to me that this kind of falls on "part-15" turf.

Hence the traditional boillerplate:

"Operation of this device is subject to the following two conditions:
1) This device may not generate harmful interference
2) This device must accept any interference received, including that which may cause undesired operation." (Emphasis added.)

so true, but to TX on exactly on one FRS GMRS frequency not 2.5khz above or below and not splattering is some weird harmonic coincidence. I wonder if in that case it might localized control signals sent to an optional remote unit (say in the trunk).
