Very, very nice Lino!

You have certainly got some serious height going on with your loop installation.
Based on your and others recommendations, I have just ordered an ALA1530 from Wellbrook.
Andy is very quick to respond to emails and is very helpful.

I doubt that I can get mine up that high, but the website and reviews I have read state that they will work at ground level. Mine should be up at about 8 feet with a pole I have set aside.
Also have ordered a rotator, which features positional memories that will help to null out persistent local noise sources.

Cannot wait to get my delivery and try it out!

Thanks for posting the photo Lino!

Regards, Commscanaus.

Hi Commscanaus took me a while to get the right height the ALA1530L wasnt performing very good when it was 6 metres high cut the pole down to 4 metres works perfect maybe thats because its got the high gain compare to th ALA1530,what coax are u going to be using and which model loop did u get..

Gday Greg thank u..

Hi Lino,

My loop was posted this morning from the UK.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes to arrive!

The model I have purchased is the ALA1530AL-1.
There is a MW broadcast station about 10km away from me, so I thought that the S model with higher gain preamp could cause me some issues.

Now that the southern hemisphere winter is just about here, the lower HF bands are opening up to some interesting activity. Hopefully I can enjoy the lower bands without as much broadband noise that I have to put up with now.

Great setup Lino. It must be interesting to monitor HF from Australia.

Well, thanks to Lino, I'm now looking around for more stuff to sell (eyeballs the Pro-197) to purchase a Wellbrook. I've listened to other conversations about the loops, but this thread has officially pushed me "over the edge"

One question - where is everyone getting the rotors? I didn't see them on Wellbrook's site - are you all just using an assortment of available antenna rotors?

Yes Mike, Lino is sending us all loopy!!!

The problem some of us are having are huge noise levels, due mainly to being in a suburban location.
With many of my neighbours now using huge plasma TV's (the guy right next door has a 60" mega sized set that draws as much current as a several vacuum cleaners!!) and those awful CFL light bulbs, the HF noise has risen to the point of being unbearable.

That coupled with the small backyard that does not allow for many of the longwire or dipole arrays to be put up made the decision to try a Wellbrook Loop an easy one.

The reason for the rotator is that it will enable the loop to be turned, helping to null out any sources of noise since the loop exhibits a figure of 8 directivity pattern.

Check out the details and polar plot of the ALA1530 here: http://www.wellbrook.uk.com/pdf/ALA1530.pdf

Presently I use an Off Center Fed Dipole antenna, which works fine on 7, 14 and 21Mhz with a transceiver and receives reasonably well through a tuner for SW listening.
The noise here makes HF listening very unpleasant and frustrating and when the neighbours turn on their plasma TV, apart from dimming all the lights in the street, it makes listening just about impossible. The company that generates the cities power has had to employ more people to shovel the coal into the furnace faster when the big plasma TV is turned on ;)

Whilst not expecting miracles, the loop should pick up the same signals as the OCFD, but with the ability to null out some of the local noise sources.

Lino: I will be using some RG58 to start with, since that is already a spare run fed through the wall to outside. Eventually I will run some RG-213 outside but that will require a session with the impact drill and masonry bit!
