By Deputy Chief Frank Dowlin May 31, 2011 In the early morning hours of May 31 2011 the Modena fire Company was alerted at 0116 to relocate to the Po-Mar-lin Fire Company with one engine. Upon Engine 37-2 responding with a crew of 6 at 0121 we were redirected to the barn fire at 248 Hood Road in West Marlborough Township.
While Engine 37-2 made it way to the incident the company was re-alerted for the Brush truck to assist with ember control, and later the Ambulance was also sent for rehab and standby. Engine 37-2 arrived on scene and was directed to assist Engine 24-1 with setting up a fill sight in a pond at the intersection of 926 and Mosquito Lane, after establishing a good water supply Engine 37-2 and crew then went to the scene for man power.
Brush 37 arrived on scene and was directed to cover the fields to the rear of the barn in case of flying embers, the Brush stood by and never went in service. Engine 37-2 crew assisted with moving hand lines around the scene and later went in-service on the #2 floor on side C of the structure for overhaul.
The barn was approximately 20 X 100 with the #1 floor being a standard barn layout and the # 2 floor split between a hay loft and an apartment in the rear, the first arriving chief officer Chief 22 had fire showing on side A of the structure. Once fire got into the hay loft fire spread quickly through out the structure.
The fire was placed under control after the balk of the fire was knocked down, heavy machinery was brought to the scene to demolition some of the unsafe walls of the structure so firefighter could work around the structure extinguishing hot spots.
All units working into the morning hours and watched to sun rise from across the fields before breaking down operations and return to station at 0600.
Units: Engine 37-2, Brush 37, Ambulance 37-1 Mutual Aid: 36, 12, 22, 32, 27, 23, 24, 44, 25, 39, Lancaster 5-2, New Castle Tanker 19
