I hear more and more transmissions (mostly ambulances, but some police) referring to on-board MDC's and I assume they are onboard computers that receive information from dispatch. What exactly is being sent to the MDC's and is there a way to montior them? Thanks.

MDT's (Mobile Data Terminals) utilize telemetry, usually digital. They can not be monitored, unless you had a terminal linked to the system. You can try to listen if you lock the freq in, but it sounds like gibberish.

The data being sent is call location, GPS coords, other information. Most systems are two-way, in which the MDT sends information about the unit's location, speed, direction of travel, etc.

You don't have any business monitoring things like patient medical info that would be passed over a MDT instead of over the air anyway.
Agree absolutely. But that wasn't the purpose of the post. The purpose was to find out what the equipment is, and what it is used for.

Mobile Data Computer. A computer in the vehicle connected to a closed wireless network. Used to process information public safety personnel need to perform their duties. That includes writing and submitting incident reports/call information, email and text messaging with co-workers, receiving call detail information from dispatch, access to NCIC database systems, mapping systems, etc. Some wireless networks use locally licensed frequencies and use a protocol like RD-LAP, others use a commercial wireless carrier service.

in the state here some agencies use MDTs via Pal800 data coverage but some just use aircards from like VZW or Sprint so it is all via wireless internet and not radio..
