What exactly is the LMPD FLEX unit anyway?

I've been watching the LMPD show for a while and every time I see it I ask what exactly is the FLEX unit anyway?

One that doesn't hit other civilian cars in the intersection?

They explain it every now and then, but I think it was concentrated, and free patrolling looking for suspicious activity, drugs, guns instead of working a specific patrol beat. I only see the show occasionally.

Al is pretty close to being correct. They are district based detectives that specialize in Narcotics and activities such as that. With Metro Narcotics being plucked so thin each division has a flex platoon. Some are more active than others, such as the 4th Division and the 2nd Division. The one in the 2nd Division has several members of LMPD SWAT on it as well.

If you have watched it and see the guys that are running in the parking lot, jumping on the fence and trying to kick each others butt, they are 2 of the SWAT guys.
