Now that pro-83 is disqualified Im thinking about getting a pro-97. It is a trunking scanner. But I dont really know what trunking means or triple-trunking? confused.

Head on over to the top of the page there and check out the wiki. Ther eis a TON of information there.

But as you were told, you can pick up an 83 for less then what you expected now if you hit E-bay.

"Trunking" is where the conversation changes frequencies with almost every new transmission. If your scanner is not a trunktracker, you would have to constantly scan through a bunch of busy frequencies to try to follow a conversation.

A trunking capable scanner will automatically follow those frequency changes for you, so you can hear complete conversations. The PRO-97 would not be a bad choice, but definitely consider other alternatives before you buy.

And just as a Reminder... there are no dumb questions. The best thing about these forums is that you have a place to ask questions from people who can help. Hope you enjoy the new scanner.

Agreed. And if you ever get one of these snob "RTFM" type people, just ignore 'em, cos they're useless anyway.

While it is true, that there are no dumb questions, only dumb answers (As often shown here :) ) (I'm joking!)

It is best to put as much thought into your questions as you expect in the answer.

Another way to put it is trunk(ing) of a tree. The trunk between roots and branches allows the smooth flow of nutrients in a small bundle of fibers, a trunk or "bundle" of radio frequencies do the same thing. Rather than waiting through transmissions and dead air on an individual frequency the radio scans quickly through the bundle and uses the first dead air it comes to. Each transmission is "tagged" on the data channel so the other radios in the system can follow and not lose each other. Nature abhors a vacuum and so does a trunking system so by filling it with transmissions dead air is minimized making the most efficient use of air time and frequency spectrum, each "talk group" doesn't require it's own frequency.

And there you have it for the non-wiki subscribers.

How true.
