That is correct, Astro Saber IIIs. Dual-mode analog/digital (P25), though all but a couple LAPD frequencies use P25 exclusively. They've begun the switch to the new "frequency configuration" this past week (early October), and I'll post a separate message about it.

The LAPD ASTRO Saber's have the letters "LAPD" engraved into the front of the case by Motorola as a factory item. The older units also have an option called MODAT with is an old form of digital signalling that LAPD used in the late 70's-early 90's on their conventional channels

The AS is no longer made by /\/\, but it is supported until 2008...presumably since the Fed's and LAPD were large comsumers and still use them, although the Fed's are switching to the XTS5000 now.

The analog saber line was argueably the best portable /\/\ made, and the digital ASTRO Saber is no execption. I've got a VHF ASTRO Saber and use it every day for work, pleasure and amateur radio in both analog and digital modes. Where I'm located, 85% of what I use and listen to is VHF so it makes a very nice scanner also.
