Windows 7 x64 seems to be the best OS Microsoft has put out so far, with older XP Pro a close 2nd place winner.

I haven't used Windows 8 yet, but I'm not very happy on the graphical changes they've made to the OS.

I used Apple/Mac once and NEVER AGAIN.

If you want to go Linux, Fedora and Ubuntu are great free operating systems. But depending on your hardware, Linux can either work great out of the box, or can require hours of trying to figure out why something as simple as a sound card doesn't work lol.

Me personally, I use Windows 7 x64 Professional with Office 2010 at work. At home, my desktop is 10 years old, so I run Lubuntu Linux (a stripped down version of Ubuntu) because it doesn't require a powerful CPU or a lot of RAM to run.

The land of broken calculators.
Excluding mobile devices, I'm running XP pro on every computer except for a couple with linux... laptop running Ubuntu and a server running CentOS. (I cant remember what versions)

Newer
does not always mean better.

Linux is to complicated i tryed a few times to learn but just dont get it even the ones with the windows look

windows 7 like you guys i try to stay high i am on ultimate home is missing to much

i like the higher also because like xp xp pro was very close to rock solid

windows 7 ultimate seems to be that way this is the first time i have been 64 bi last time was vista and my copy had lots of 86 programs problems

7 seems to have fixed it so i guess im happy as long as this pc dont die i refuse windows 8

like WB4CS i hate the graphic interface

i think if you go custom pcs you can still force what os you want or some may even doe just drivers

is that Vertex 4 SSD drive one of those new flat super drives they came out with i have wanted to build one with one of those and some othe new fancy crap

thats the stuff i stopped pc repairs the boards hard drives everything i decided instead of relearning to just quit

i wish i could be like you rapidcharger my old ways are hard to toss i love xp it was so easy to network all these others are to many steps and trouble

i also like rapidchargers signature newer is not always better ooooh man tell me about it everything new i have had to buy sucks hard to use o basically school to learn the crap my home patrol i still haven't learned hours of reading the pdf hours of just playing with it tons of posts on here and i still dont know crap what fun new is

Debian, with KDE or LXDE.

Now, I realise some people don't like the KDE front-end, which is why the extraordinarily inflexible and feature-stripped GNOME front-end is available as an alternative instead. GNOME is essentially what you'd get if you were to take the pre-version "X" MAC/OS graphic front-end, dumb it down thousands of times more than App£e originally intended and put it in a Linux environment. Needless to say, if GNOME's too hard to figure out, well, then I don't know what else to suggest other than to unplug the computer and just talk on the telephone!

I'm somewhat with WB4CS. I had to put up with 68K MAC systems for too many years at school (and later OS/X X86es for too many years at work) and wouldn't dare have one if I have anything to say about it. OS/X brings new meaning to the word "trash".

Window$ is and probably always will be a massive security hazard and does not belong on any machine connected to the greater public Internet or any other public computer network, period. Apart from Redmond's marketing clout, I can't think of any other reason why Window$ has held on as long or as strongly as it has considering the wide availability of other more stable, secure and free operating systems. Linux (and BSD) is an OS designed for functionality. Window$ is an OS designed for marketing.

Just my £0.02 worth.

Uhhh.....I wouldn't exactly call anything from Micro$pend "hacker heaven", due to "their" software's closed nature, overly draconian digital restriction management and other such problems by design. CRACKER-heaven, yeah, because of its brittleness and its many security flaws, but next to O$/X, Window$ is probably one of the most hacker-hostile platforms there is. It will probably only continue to become even more so as progress stumbles onward. Which is another good reason to avoid it....

What is it about Linux that's so confusing? If you know your way around Finder (pre-O$/X), then you at least know the basics of how to work GNOME enough to be productive, considering that the latter is basically a horribly p..s-poor reimplementation of the former.

Not that I would ever actually condone using Ubuntu, you can get a "live CD" image of it that you can boot your computer from, play around with it and practise a bit, and I think it might still be possible to get a distribution of Ubuntu with GNOME as its front-end. (That's another thing: avoid Unity. It's garbage, as well.) While live CDs are not a substitute for a proper hard drive installation, they are extremely useful for evaluating an operating system, evaluating the functions of its interface and learning how it all works without changing your machine's existing OS installation.

the biggest problem i remember about Linux was one with the os interface i could never get network and other crap to connect it went to code programming i dont know Linux i was dos sys programmer it may be different but last i used and knew it looked like apple and windows but didnt auto detect stuff and i agree the more i learn about 7 and how to bypass the crap on it xp up to 7 are ok security just be careful i know some that run window naked no virus spy etc and dont have problems its sites emails and what you give out or get into that gets the system trashed only once since using this pc have i had spyware so bad it erased the whole list in system manager all gone complete relode i think i caused that one otherwise i cant remember the last virus spyware hijack anything so its not as bad as its rep but is a well known line that most hackers train and hack not to say they dont other ones

back when i was learning it was batch programs to loop reboot or if nasty format command mostly gags or leaving hi or faces on there pc now they are out to destroy and steal and all the mayhem they can cause man how fast it changes o another good prank tell the printer to spool and empty back when it was dot matrix

So....if I'm understanding that huge unpunctuated run-on sentence/paragraph, the confusing part was not the user front-end but the hardware not automatically detecting, correct?

Most modern Linux distributions that are worth their salt do auto-detect hardware; I think it's been a standard part of the kernel for at least the last decade or so.

The real annoyance is finding a distribution that actually includes proprietary drivers, since some distributions (especially Debian) are so annoyingly anal-retentive about anything closed-source that they go to the extent of providing all-new reverse engineered drivers just to maintain compliance with their overly-broad "open source" philosophies. They do provide some compatibility; not nearly what one'd obtain if they were using "the real thing" but enough to get it running more or less satisfactorily. Most machines I've installed it on, though, have been completely self-configuring right off the CD and I've only encountered a couple cases of hardware not being supported by it at all (a couple PCI-bus softmodems which I didn't expect to work to begin with, and a 64-bit desktop with such a modern Ethernet chipset that there wasn't even a compatible generic driver available for it.)

Mint Linux, as I understand, does provide access to proprietary hardware drivers and was supposedly started in reaction to the aforementioned philosophies (despite ironically being Debian-based.)

Running Window$ on the network "naked" without an anti-crapware programme and firewall is like diving into a swimming pool full of used hypodermic needles--it's an invitation for trouble. There may not be problems *now*, but give it a couple days or so.

no its a German guy i know been for years beats me not the way i run my system as much overkill as i can and avoid internet explorer or outlook

like i said before i run fire fox with almost all the security ad ons it has
except a few they jam to much but one really good one is called ghostery blocks lots of trackers and other crap i also have two search engine blockers

one you can see in the corner funny carp like it tells Google Chinese palace and other goofy crap

and i have face book and other phishing filters i haven't had much trouble like said before

a couple months ago is the first in years i have been hit

im just more of a windows person at least until they force all computers to go win 8 and above then i will happily jump on Linux and seems like that days coming fast

you cant buy name brand pcs as far as i know without 8 on it now days so i may be switching and learning real soon

Huh. I'm guessing the German guy must be working through a hardware firewall/port blocker, or must have a pretty decent hosts file (if you need one, I have one I can send you) or both.

I'd hope (especially for M$' sake) that they won't be forcing 8 on everything and giving users the option to run 7 if they aren't doing that already, like what they did with XP during the whole Vi$ta disaster. Much as I can't stand 7, after seeing 8 in action (and having cried the couple times I actually had to try and use it), 7's actually quite an upgrade compared to the latter. They'd be wise to do that, given 8's thus-far horrible track record.

Supposedly it's possible to get (Allah help me) a Dell box with some hacked-up and heavily customised version of Ubuntu on it, but as I understand it's just one (business-oriented) model and it's really overpriced for what it is. It'd probably just be simpler to get a pile of computer parts off Amazon and build one, then put whichever OS you prefer on it then and there. Likely be a lot cheaper and more reliable than any Dell, too.

I jumped the Window$ ship when XP/SP2 was still current and haven't gone back. My one and only *X/*SD/WinDO$ multibooter has 3.11 (MeSsyDOS 6.22), 98 and NT 5 and that's it as far as that goes. Old tech, but at least that combination actually does what I need it to do (except run my RTL2832 SDR kit, but that's another thread entirely.)

Whats best, very subjective, everyone have their favorite OS. Best OS is the one of free of licensing, this makes Linux Ubuntu and Mint on top of the list. Run on anything, and most secure out of the box.
Windows 7 SP1 and fully updated is good as anything and secure with decent Security Suite, my personal preference is ESET Security 6, because is using next to nothing of the resources. You can't run Win 7 on old hardware either and the drivers will not fully support older chipsets. Anytime you run Window OS with full admin rights you are open to hackers. Setup standard user account and run every day stuff on it. HP, Acer are full of the crapware out of the box. Install Revo Uninstaller and remove all unnecessary pre installed software, your PC will start up 100 faster. Run CCleaner + Ccleaner Enhancer and remove rest of the garbage. Check your start up applications both CCleaner and Revo have the facility to do that or run msconfig manually and check and un tick some startup applications. Yes, you can make Windows OS run efficiently with little bit of an effort. My OS, Window 7 64 bit Ultimate on desktop, Win 7 Pro 64 bit on HP ProBook notebook, Linux Ubuntu and Win 8.1 preview on both run in VMWare or VMBox (free) 8 GB of RAM on both computers.
ps Get use to Win 8.1 Microsoft seems to be not backing down and just added Start option and make Win 8.1 more secure, no going back to Win XP or 7 stuff. Win XP and Office 2003 support and updates will end in April 2014.
My 2 cents added. For more professional and detailed advice please send me PM.
Regards Chris
