• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Where can I find the software for the TK-2180?

KPG-89D is what you want.

You ~might~ be able to get it from a Kenwood dealer still, but these radios were end-of-life'd about 10 years ago.

A careful search of the internet may produce what you desire.

But, be careful with these posts, the people that run things are very specific about this sort of question. Rules and guidelines for forum post content :

  • No one using this site regardless of membership status may sell/re-sell, request or attempt to trade software which is originally sold for retail. This is to include programming software of any type, registration keys, general software applications, operating systems, etc. This rule extends to private messaging and using the link to email a member. If caught you will receive an immediate infraction so it is in your best interests to be as descriptive as possible when asking about software. Note: P2P, torrents, etc can be used for legitimate sources of software so discussion of them is permitted in the Tavern.

According to their website CHIRP will program the TK2180. It may not do all the features that the Kenwood software has. The Kenwood software is KPG89D and the Kenwood KPG36 FTDI programming cable.

Going forward KPG-89 can be found on net. American Communications likely has it, but if look hard enough most likely find it on internet.

If you need cables BlueMax49 or maybe it's Blue maxer49 (It's been a long holiday weekend) is good for programming cables.

I tried just for fun about 6 months ago and Chirp will read/write to TK-3180. The big thing is it ignores the read/write passwords. So if you have read/write passwords it doesn't effect Chirp and can still read and write to the radio.

Also you can't really assign buttons and do scan lists in Chirp

CHIRP should be only used to program the plethora of cheap Chinese garbage hammys and GMRS seem to be drawn to like moths to a light.

Look closely, you will find the proper kenwood developed software for that radio. It is used by all of the TK-x180 radios, both portable and mobile.

If your don't use the latest and greatest KPG89DNK you should be alright with wideband.

Just use KPG89-DK. Never had any issues with TK-3180 entering wideband channels.

Remember for ham and GMRS if the radio is working no need to updated to newest firmware with possibly of lossing wideband.
