I'm looking for high end receiver.
Do you think the AR-Alpha has better performance than the newer 5001D?

While were on this topic, would you rather have an Icom R9500 instead of these AOR models?

Thanks!

Thanks I did see those AOR Alpha problem videos on youtube. They are a bit disturbing for this price point! I'm leaning towards the 5001D partly because it has that network connector so that I can operate remotely. The fact that it is a third of the price of the r9500 helps too! While the performance may not be as great, I probably don't have the antenna capability to take advantage.

Hi not yet. I read the pop comm review of the arl2300 LAN adapter for the aor 5001 And it sounds like a great of you want to operate it remotely which I might do.

I broadened my search to compare these aor models with professional receivers like rohde schwarz and IZT. I'm trying to figure out why they are 5x or more expensive and is it worth it for a non professional. I'm comparing sensitivity noise floor ip3 values etc. I heard a HF comparison on YouTube of an IZT receiver vs a Perseus and it was impressive. I assume for VHF it would be too?

I did however purchase a used antenna to start. It's a Rohde and Schwarz powered antenna for 25-1300mhz and I found it on eBay for a fraction of the retail price! So now I need to plug it into something!

I have the AOR AR2300 at work located on top of one of our buildings and the ARL2300 Ethernet adapter. Someone seemed to think it was funny to put the radio guy down in the basement...
Anyway, I needed a remote controlled receiver that could sit on the network and allow me to listen in on various things from my basement office...
I looked at the Win radio line, but they didn't seem to have a remote controlled antenna switch that would work the way I needed it to.
I looked at the Icom R9500, but I couldn't get a clear answer about remote control. For that price, it should have had something. I certainly didn't need the big display on a remote radio.
I even looked at other RS-232 controlled radios and was considering a Linux box to remotely control it.

In the end, the price of the AR/ARL2300 and the features seemed like a good way to go. I put more money into the antennas.

A year up there and no issues. It works way better than what I need. I can access it from anywhere I have an internet connection, and I can give others access.

I've got one more site to build and I'm looking at what receiver I'm going to install out there, so I'm interested to see what other reasonable options there are.
