I have a Whistler TRX2. Is it possible to load the scanner with control channels only. In Onondaga County NY, those control channels are all in the 453, 460 range.

Yes, though I would recommend controls and alts.

Onondaga County is a 15 site simulcast system which may give you problems with a TRX-2. If you get dropouts, missed transmissions, and garbled audio, that will be due to simulcast distortion. The Uniden SDS100 handheld and SDS200 base/mobile are the only scanners designed to receive simulcast systems.

Before I commit myself, what type of system is that? P25 or Type II is yes, DMR or NXDN is no, all channels must be entered as these do not do true trunk tracking on the TRX scanners

Screen shot of system..

The TRX was a gift. The Unidens are way too much for my budget however. But thanks for the tip....

Loud and clear there. They sure don't engineer these systems to cater to the hobbyist's listening interests. Quite the opposite. I had to sell 2 scanners to come up with enough dough for my SDS100. Well well worth the investment

Maybe I should start compiling soda cans, and saving pennies to get that SDS100. The way encryption is going, not sure it would be a wise investment. Thanks for your thoughts!

@rfking123 Have you considered a software defined radio (SDR) to monitor Onondaga County? Assuming you have a personal computer, you can put a system together using a RTL-SDR for as cheap as $29.95. You will need a few computer skills, but the payoff is well worth it.

You know, I never even thought of this! I will look into the SDR and see what I can get for the most bang for the buck! Thanks!!

If you do take the SDR leap, you will find lots of help here on Radio Reference. Please don't hesitate to ask questions. If you want to ping me via Direct Messages, that is ok too. I can help with hardware and software configurations.

Sorry, I can't help much with your TRX2. I have Unidens and numerous SDRs.

I am working on a Onondaga County file for your scanner. I will attach it when completed. We will be able to see if the scanner will work.

While the TRX series isn't designed for simulcast systems, definitely try it out first with it programmed for your local system. Simulcast problems vary by location because they are affected by the distance and direction of transmitters. Meaning that you might happen to be in a sweet spot where the effects are minimized. Don't bet on it though.

Here is your Onondaga County programming file. I assume that you have the TRX-2 EZ Scan software installed. Save the attached file to your computer. Go to the File tab in EZ Scan and Restore Configuration FROM Archive. In the Downloads folder, Open the Onondaga Co NY file. Click on Yes at the Overwrite Warning. The file will populate EZ Scan. Connect your scanner to your computer with the USB cable. The scanner should be off. Go to the Scanner/SD Card tab and Copy Configuration TO Scanner Memory/SD Card. Click on Yes at the Overwrite Warning. Click on Continue. There are 12 scan lists for you to select what you want to monitor. All of the scan lists will be enabled when you first program the scanner. You can view the scan lists by clicking on the General Settings tab of EZ Scan. If you have problems with garbled audio, that will be due to simulcast distortion. Please let me know if you have any questions.

My base located WS1098 scanners do AMAZEBALLS on Phase 1 and Phase 2 LSM systems locally...as long as I get the fixed indoor antenna set exactly and perfectly. Oddly, my best performance with negating and LSM garbledness, is using a NMO34 low band antenna, positioned just right in view of the 7/800 LSM towers, whichh allows me to hear highway patrol. If I replace the antenna with a 7/800 dedicated version, I get RX issues.

Moral of the story, if located stationary, move the sucker and antenna around until you find a sweet spot, then glue the handheld to that spot :p

Also remember that the scanner has an attenuator feature that can be set individually to each site. If the signal strength are high enough it can be used to attenuate enough signal to only receive one of the simulcast sites.

Yes, I have done the same! It made a difference! Thanks!
