I have a Whistler TRX2. Is it possible to load the scanner with control channels only. In Onondaga County NY, those control channels are all in the 453, 460 range.

P25 Phase-II with simulcast cells. Simulcast distortion will likely be a major factor while monitoring this system with a WhistlerBefore I commit myself, what type of system is that? P25 or Type II
Before I commit myself, what type of system is that? P25 or Type II is yes, DMR or NXDN is no, all channels must be entered as these do not do true trunk tracking on the TRX scanners

The TRX was a gift. The Unidens are way too much for my budget however. But thanks for the tip....Onondaga County is a 15 site simulcast system which may give you problems with a TRX-2. If you get dropouts, missed transmissions, and garbled audio, that will be due to simulcast distortion. The Uniden SDS100 handheld and SDS200 base/mobile are the only scanners designed to receive simulcast systems.
Loud and clear there. They sure don't engineer these systems to cater to the hobbyist's listening interests. Quite the opposite. I had to sell 2 scanners to come up with enough dough for my SDS100. Well well worth the investmentThe Unidens are way too much for my budget however. But thanks for the tip....
Maybe I should start compiling soda cans, and saving pennies to get that SDS100. The way encryption is going, not sure it would be a wise investment. Thanks for your thoughts!Loud and clear there. You know, I never even thought of this! I will look into the SDR and see what I can get for the most bang for the buck! Thanks!!@rfking123 Have you considered a software defined radio (SDR) to monitor Onondaga County? Assuming you have a personal computer, you can put a system together using a RTL-SDR for as cheap as $29.95. You will need a few computer skills, but the payoff is well worth it.
I am working on a Onondaga County file for your scanner. I will attach it when completed. We will be able to see if the scanner will work.I have a Whistler TRX2. While the TRX series isn't designed for simulcast systems, definitely try it out first with it programmed for your local system. Simulcast problems vary by location because they are affected by the distance and direction of transmitters. Meaning that you might happen to be in a sweet spot where the effects are minimized. Don't bet on it though.
Yes, I have done the same! It made a difference! Thanks! My base located WS1098 scanners do AMAZEBALLS on Phase 1 and Phase 2 LSM systems locally...as long as I get the fixed indoor antenna set exactly and perfectly. Oddly, my best performance with negating and LSM garbledness, is using a NMO34 low band antenna, positioned just right in view of the 7/800 LSM towers, whichh allows me to hear highway patrol. If I replace the antenna with a 7/800 dedicated version, I get RX issues.
Moral of the story, if located stationary, move the sucker and antenna around until you find a sweet spot, then glue the handheld to that spot
