I have a Whistler WS1065 that was working great until today. The audio is all muffled and sounds like they are talking with marbles in their mouth. I have to have the volume control all most wide open to hear anything. I do not use the external speaker or earphone jacks, just the internal speaker. I did plug a speaker in the back and tried earphones in the front, with the same results. I plug in a computer and using ARC500PRO and using virtual control the scanner is working and logging what is programmed. I guess the audio amplifier is shot. This radio is not near any two-way radios or WIFI systems. Is this work repairing?
Thanks for your reply in advance......

If weather doesn't work, remove the cover of the scanner. In the PRO-197, your scanner's older brother, the audio output IC is a TDA1905 if I remember correctly. It will be a dual in-line package chip in the center area of the circuit board. There will be a couple of large resistors around it. I have seen the IC short in a couple of scanners. Check to see if the resistors around it are discolored. If so, the IC is probably shorted. With power applied to the scanner and turned on, if the IC is extremely hot, that is the problem. Be careful not to burn your fingers. It is replaceable by a NTE7000. If the IC is bad and you are not proficient replacing electronic components, I would send it in for repair. The IC is soldered on both sides of the circuit board and is very difficult to replace without damaging the board. The WS1065 is based on the same design as the PRO-197. I am assuming that the components are similar.

Lots of unknowns to come to a definite determination. Is this only noticed with P25 audio? What about analog? More than one system?

Per post #3 I removed the scanner from its case and then the other two cover that protect the circuit board. One of the resistor looked a little faded. I wipe it off with a Qtip and then check the connectors that go to the circuit board. I put it together and said if it did not work, I will send it in for repair. The older you get it is a lot harder to work on things this small. The scanner works great now even NOAA and a few of my analogue frequencies. The scanner is working for over a week with no speaker issues.
