What is that object behind the fire hydrant and floating toward the PD cruiser. Looks like one of the floating mines broke loose from its mooring.

Between rainfall and the storm surge from the ocean I wouldn't be surprised if it was an old WW2 contact mine, wouldn't be the first time old ordinance washed up.

You've got that right! Every so often, around the Raritan River basin (especially Sayreville and South Amboy) construction reveals old ordnance, (including WW I French grenades) that still packed a wallop when they were exploded by the Fort Monmouth EOD guys. When they build the County College, on the grounds of the old Raritan Arsenal, backhoes discovered several skids and pallets of stuff that went missing during WW II and scared the hell out of everyone - even the Teamsters. Those floating metal porcupines give me a bad case of the Willies! Never got that close to one and never want to.
