The ARRL webapage can direct you to a club nearby. Go to arrl.org and at the bottom of the page in the "get Involved" section, look for clubs and click on it. You can put in your zip code and find clubs in the area. You can also locate licensing classes if you are also looking for one.

Just to add a few things. I want to get my General as well, and get flustered because you have to know so much, but I have to stop and remember some things.
This "hobby" is responsible for cell phones, TV, and making the emergency service communications a reality! Really, it's based on innovation, while you and I may not make any great strides in that, this hobby has created a lot of improvements in communications, and we have to respect that tradition.

Once upon a time you had to learn a lot of things you'd never use and had to take your test under the watchful eye of an FCC examiner at the local field office. Today the test has been simplified and streamlined given by an accredited volunteer team of 3 VECs at the local clubhouse, something that annoys the hell out of the old school hams. You'll get it soon. I'm sure the FCC isn't doing any major computer system overhauls like they were when I got my license. Took 3 months for them to issue my callsign!

Update:

Wow... What a piss poor attitude I had about the whole thing! I have the ARRL book, and it also came with a CDROM with a testing program. The first test it gave me, I got 26 out of 35 correct with a passing score.

The next test in my area is January 22, 2011. I fully intend to spank this test, and have my ticket.

I already have my new radio. A Yaesu FT-2900R. I couldn't pass the deal up I got over Thanksgiving weekend: $149 shipped to my door. It is installed in my Jeep with an NMO mounted Laird quarter wave. My friend Matt (KJ4UNR) has tested it, and we also put the SWR meter on... It barely moves, so everything is good in that department.

Now I have to wait until I take the test, and pass before I can use it! Until then, it makes a nice dash ornament....

I have also been listening on the scanner for several months. I have picked up on most of the lingo, and procedures...
