I'd go with the second mount.

I don't use Comet or other hammy antennas, I stick with Larsen and EMWave. It is just a cleaner look.

I have run a Larsen NMO 2/70B for over a decade, no issues. Excellent performance and a lot of years it was on a 1 ton Ford work truck in the oilpatch in Alberta. Lots of over grown bush and dirt roads. When I pulled the dual band radio out and installed a VHF XPR5550, I switched to a EMWave wide band 1/4 wave.

If I ever go back to having both VHF and UHF in my vehicle, I'd go back to the Larsen.

Looking at this or a fender mount for temporary measures until i can get my truck in to have 2 nmo mounts installed and wired.

If you just can't wait until you get a real NMO mount installed, I agree with @kayn1n32008 get this one. It's durable, and gets the antenna down closer to the ground plane. Plus, it'll let you use a real NMO mount, not a boogered together UHF mount that was never intended to support an antenna:

And get a proper NMO mount for it, like this one:

Benefit to those NMO mounts is that they are actually enclosed. Since it's going to be exposed on the underside of the bracket, and exposed to moisture, you want that.

I agree with the above, skip the hammy stuff. Get the right antenna now and you won't regret it later. The Larsen NMO-2/70 will outlast your current truck, plus the 5 after that, and you'll get to pass it down to your grandkids.

I am seeing a few Larsen NMO-2/70 the 2/70B, 2/70SH, and 2/70C. The B looks to be a solid coiled center whip that is 37.25", the SH looks to have a spring and center section and is 19" long. And the C has the same closed coil and is 19" with a spring also. I'm assuming the 2/70B but better safe then sorry.

C = Chrome/enclosed coil.
B = Black, has the open coil
SH = short

I've owned all three over the years.
The Black whip/open coil tends to whistle a bit at highway speeds. Open coils tend to do that.
The Chrome/enclosed coil would be a bit quieter. They can be a bit harder to find, and I'm not 100% sure Larsen still manufactures them. They were not showing last time I looked on their website.

The SH is an enclosed coil chrome model with a spring. They used to make a black/open coil version, but I haven't seen one sold new in quite a while. Maybe not looking hard enough.

So, sort of comes down to what you want. The longer antennas are 1/2 wave on VHF and a colinear on UHF. Might be a good choice if you are going to have it mounted on the fender for a while, or don't mind the taller antenna when you do get your NMO's installed.

The SH is about 19", and while that's 1/4 wave length, the loading in the center is what they claim is a center loaded half wave on VHF and 3/4 wave on UHF. It has a spring base. Might be a good option if you are concerned about low tree branches, but you can always add a spring to the longer antennas, if you wish.

I got rid of the NMO-2/70C years ago, wish I hadn't. I'm not sure where the NMO-2/70B went. My favorite in my application was always the NMO-2/70SH as it didn't whistle at highway speeds (usually) and was low profile enough to not be a big deal off road.

Either one will work well and last a long time.

Getting ready to hit order from Gigaparts, but wanted to have 1 last check before I do. Here is the list of items I have in my cart. Here are the SKUs.

ZCB25025
ZLR-NMOK
ZLR-NMO2-70SH

Figured I would get the shorter sprung one since it will be on the roof eventually. Also will i be able to reuse the coax?

For the fender mount where the underside of the NMO mount will be exposed, you really should be using the NMOHF mounts. The underside is covered on those. The NMOK is just open with the coax exposed. The exposed coax is fine when the mount is through the roof, but not a good idea on these fender mounts where it'll get rain/road salts/oil/gas, etc.

Ideally, the NMO HF with a piece of marine grade heat shrink slid over it to add an additional layer.

You can reuse the mount.
