That's caused by two things! (at least ;) )
That has just gotten to be problematic in the last month or so.

Microsoft is 'prioritizing' the Windows 10 downloads for everyone else.
So their servers are maxed out.
And .................
(Depending on your Windows version)
If you UNCHECK the option to "get updates for other Microsoft products" you'll find that the search may complete much sooner. (if at all ;) )

By the way, I just tried to check for updates from three of my computers and got the attached error.
On each one of them, clicking on check for updates four times, started the search properly.

.
Edit: Maybe ........................... not being able to update is a good thing!
If it works, don't fix it! ;)
.

LOL, yes not being able to update could be a good thing. I have only 3 updates from MS on this laptop. I had more but GWX removed them. So for security reasons while browsing on line I have heard that the computer should have all updates?

I was this laptop for DSD onlyso updates were not a big thing but now I have another computer that has taken over that function and this (the one I am typing on ) is my surfing computer.

I built my first computer in 1982 from scavenged mainframe components.

The ONLY problem I EVER had was caused by my antivirus software long ago. (I no longer use one)

BUT, I do practice 'safe computing'.
I crippled a lot of the 'features' in my email reader.
I don't go to risky or questionable web sites.
I have a big hosts. file.
I use browser plugins that help filter the junk.
I delete any questionable email and don't click on most links in emails from 'trusted people'.
I've never had another problem.

I've also debugged many computers that belonged to friends and relatives. (Probably more than 100 over the years.)
That alone was an education. ;)

Rich

Edit: I forgot to mention that I've found 'Malwarebytes Anti-Malware' and some other debugging software to very helpful.

I also use Malwarebytes, I always run it but it has only found one bug in all the years I have used it, but I wouldn't be without it. My web surfing is quite limited to a few sites, RR being one of them. Do you use a firewall at all?

Yep! They are NOT your friends.
I worked on a laptop for a friend just two weeks ago.

The Windows 10 update TRASHED it!
After the update, all it did was sit there and 'spin' forever and ever.
It was a real bear to get it back to Windows 7.

As for using 'Malwarebytes Anti-Malware' ....
That's one of the first things I recommend to people who are having problems.

Typically, after a few years of computer use 'Malwarebytes Anti-Malware' finds around 80-150 threats.

Though a few months ago, I helped a friend who had computer problems on the one his kids use.
That one had 623 threats!
I've never seen even close to that many before.

When I've run it on my eleven computers and my wife's laptop, I find NONE at all.

Thanks for the story-link. The mess Microsoft is making by their forced-upgrade seems like it could be another example of either corporation-level arrogance or desperation, or both. And, it's usually the SOHO users that get hit the worst, since large-businesses often have firewalls and update-servers in-place that allow them to block such forced updates.

Thanks also to the author of the GWX Control Panel. It has cleaned-up and prevented problems that would have been avoided if Microsoft had taken a more humble, user-friendly posture.

On my computers i have 2 admin accounts and 2 user accounts, with GWX downloaded and installed on the user accounts only, does it matter. Will it do the same job even though it is not on the amin accounts, thanks.

Thanks Rich, what an excellent program, saves countless hours of having to manually check all those KB updates.

Thank you to the previous poster who gave the Windows update numbers to remove from Windows 7. This helped me on two computers that were flashing the "Upgrade to Windows 10" window at me.

I will be running these on Win7, and then Linux. Windows and Microsoft have been nearly dead to me for a while now. This just makes it more so.

Replying to myself ..................... ;)

Well, I have a new record as of this morning......

A friend asked for my help with a computer that was completely trashed.
It was a combination of an unwanted update to Win10 and his kids just hitting OK for everything that popped up.

Among other things, 'Malwarebytes Anti-Malware' found 904 threats. I've never seen close to that many before!
(adware, trojans, etc. )

He couldn't even boot the computer without getting a screen that demanded he call a phone number for a fix.

I tried using FireFox with some popup blockers and the attempted popup count just kept increasing.
I stopped it at around 683 popups.

It took almost 4 hours to get it cleaned up and he said that it never ran so fast as it does now.
