What package do I want to download for windows and use with a gre-500/600 in retrospect. Tring to find out system info on LTR stuff and ISP as well as the cook county system. Have no issue diving into getting a new scanner, but need some guidance on what version play with what.

Also, if anyone knows what is the utility that decodes trbo and is it windows based or Linux based.

My personal opinion is to not tie up an expensive scanner that you can put to use in better ways. I am using a discriminator tapped Pro-2006 (oldie but goodie).

I run two different versions from UniTrunker. One version is 1.0.0.24 is relatively new but there are a few versions newer. A second version is one of the obsolete Retro versions 0.1.0.54.

Both versions are using the same sound card input from the discriminator tap. I like the way the later version displays activity and I run the older version because I have a friend that uses that one. I developed software for him that reviews the files created in the older version. Both versions operate at the same time on the same computer.

You may get better decoding by taking a data from a scanner that has already decoded the CC but I really don't think I am missing anything with my setup.

If I were using a receiver like yours I would stick with the most recent version of UniTrunker.

I second that. Also keep in mind that you don't even have to use a trunking capable scanner. An old scanner that only does 800 MHz conventional will work so long as you can tune it to the control channel of the site you want to monitor (assuming you are wanting to monitor 800 MHz) and so long as you can tap the discriminator (base band audio) you will be set. If you'd rather, you can also program up a commercial radio in conventional mode to receive only on the outbound control channel. An old Maxtrac would work great for this purpose.

Considering what non narrow banding radios are going for these days, they are a far better radio to run any application from. I run multiple Maxtrac radios and Spectra's for Unitrunker. The discriminator output is perfect for decoding since the radio was designed for trunking decoding anyway.

I already have other scanners in play, so I could careless if one stay on a certain system. I'm not tech savoy enough to tap the direct audio tap. I have no prolbem purchasing said scanners. I buy the gre500 as I need a newer digital scanner to show ids and break down nac codes. I already have a bcd396t and a bcd996t.

What types of systems do you want to monitor?

If you want to monitor LTR, a PSR310/410 or PSR700 or BCT15X or BC346XT will do. These are low cost inline decoding receivers. You would have to program the LTR channels into the radio. If you want to search for LTR channels, you're better off using LTR Analyzer and a tapped radio. The HP-1 with Extreme firmware upgrade will also sort out LCNs but is pricey for LTR service.

If you want to follow Motorola or EDACS, the above models will work. If you want to discover new systems (eg. punch in a control channel frequency and have Unitrunker tell you what's there), the PSR310/410 models will do that.

I believe Trunk88 supports the above models except the HP-1.

If you want to follow P25 Phase 1, the PSR500/600/800 and BCD396XT and BCD996XT and HP-1 will work. However, if you to want discover new systems, the PSR500/600 work great in Tune mode. Likewise the HP-1 with Extreme firmware allows dialing a frequency to see what's there.

I believe Pro96Com supports all but the HP-1 so that's an extra software option.

The HP-1 (with Extreme firmware) is both computer programmable and computer controllable meaning you could use the radio for control channel monitoring or voice following. The downside of the HP-1 is a lack of choices in decoding software - which may change over time.

If you want to monitor P25 X2, the PSR800 is the only option. The '800 is computer programmable but not computer controlled. You must navigate the menus to seek a specific frequency. This model is unique in providing both control channel decoding over the USB cable and optionally provide discriminator audio over the headphone jack. Searching for a signal is a bit clumsy.

If you want to monitor P25 Phase 2, you'll have to wait. Any of the above Phase 1 capable models can be used to decode the control channel but not the voice channels.

The main advantage of discriminator audio is the ability to decode signals the radio's own firmware doesn't understand.
