One man died early Friday morning after his car ran off the road and rolled onto its top in the Greeley Canal No. 2 just east of Windsor.
Robert Brunner, 64, was driving his 1999 blue BMW south on Weld County Road 27. About a half mile south of Colo. 392, his car ran off the road just before the canal, grazed the side of the bridge, and landed on its top on the bank of the canal.
Brunner was the only occupant and was dead when members of the Windsor/Severance Fire Department responded to the call around 9:30 a.m.
A nearby resident, Dr. Joe Stricklin, a veterinarian, told firefighters and Colorado State Patrol that he drove by the bridge around 8:30 a.m. and saw nothing, said Mike Davis, with the Windsor/Severance Fire Department.
"He said about 9:20 a.m., he saw the debris on the road and saw the wheels sticking up," Davis said.
Troopers at the scene wouldn't discuss a possible cause for the car veering off the road without further investigation.
Brunner is the third person to die on Weld County roads this year compared to one at this time last year.
